I suspect you are right howard.

Just water and fertilize to promote grass growth not to soften the going.

its firm ground with an easy & loose top few inches...would struggle to produce a more unsafe surface than this imo

I was questioning why it wasn’t genuine firm yesterday, it’s not good enough.

Bright Thunder won on soft last time and Sqqara Sands has soft form, I know times say it’s not slow but when betting I like to know what the going is.

I don’t like this ground Figgis and a different track a different day means I’d not be shocked either way…
Little puffs of soil shouldn’t be erupting like mini volcanoes and I have that memory of him still from the Lagadere.
I hope all come back safe.

Goodwood is a chalk down site, it will be free draining and relatively quick drying. It is likely to to be a little loose on top after persistent rain, but id have thought this would have sorted out overnight following a dry evening, night and now morning.
I suspect the injuries are somewhat freakish and nothing to do with the ground conditions.
Report uptheirons July 30, 2025 2:24 PM BST
Blame Culture rules today.
Horses can and do injure themselves on any ground.
I haven't noticed any slipping on the bends so far

Goodwood is a joke course. Overwatered for years. Obviously no way of knowing whether its contributed to the injuries this year but it does feel like it can't help having loose ground because of overwatering on the first two days.
Report charbar67 July 31, 2025 2:10 PM BST
Have some sympathy for the poor clerk, this downpour probably means he won’t be able to water after racing and he was so hoping to

Probably????
Report geoff m July 31, 2025 2:20 PM BST
overwatering causes a shallow root base and therefore more likely to be loose ground.
Report wondersobright July 31, 2025 2:22 PM BST
nothing ever happened in this volume when this meeting was run on firm or g/f most years
Report wondersobright July 31, 2025 2:23 PM BST
