Anybody remember this horse?

Trained by Noel Murless had won Eclipse prior to King George

Slightly before my time seaside, how old were you then. I remember him as the sire of Bustino and Height of Fashion the dam of Mtoto.

Ex-Irish. Had the one stellar season winning 4/4 as a 4yo. Was ante-post favourite for the Arc. A big outsider won that race from the two horses that Busted had easily beaten in the King George. Timeform rated 134.

Should have added he won the Eclipse and King George on successive weeks.

Differentdrum Yes, to have two such prestige races with only seven days between them both designed for top class middle distance horses was a strange state of affairs. Busted was largely unconsidered for the Eclipse with Bill Rickaby up and stable jockey George Moore on Fleet. Busted won easily and Moore took the ride at Ascot next time.

I think Busted suffers a bit with posterity, being sandwiched between Sea Bird and Sir Ivor, and the fact he didn't run much having got injured.  1967 was really the year of Royal Palace but apart from these two, it wasn't a great year if looking for a superstar, apart from 2yo Petingo who was rated above anything rational, otherwise the main topic was the exporting of top British horses to France, Vaguely Noble being the best example along with filly Heath Rose who almost won the Arc that year.  The Arc epitomised the lack of quality with it being a bunched finish won by 66-1 Topyo, and yes on form Busted would have won easily.

Interestingly, Busted became the sire of Bustino, whilst Great Nephew, who he beat in the Eclipse sired Grundy.

First time I ever heard of Royal Palace was in the red stop press in the top right corner of a newspaper I was delivering.

It would be fun trying to explain to a teenager what it was and how it brought us the very latest news at the time. 

Another 'highlight' of that period, was because of two brothers, Ribocco and Ribero, who both won the Irish Derby and St. Leger in 67 / 68. Extraordinary, really.

As there are a few older guys here perhaps you could help name this horse for me. A couple of times a week a few of us would pick a horse to put in a yankee, most likely a Wednesday as we had a sports afternoon in our unit and either 1976 or 1977.

One of the lads picked up some winnings including my pick which I also had £1 ew on, he asked me what my lucky number was, I don't have one I replied. In that case it should be 8 he declared, my horse was no8, drawn 8, won 8L @ 8/1. No doubt similar has happened since but this but I didn't really think about it at the time.

Probably a needle in a haystack finding the name but maybe something a tabloid racing page might have picked up on? Apologies for the after time.lol

England's Glory would be an apt horse for today.
