thanks aberdonia. " "We don't use a lot of data and it's certainly not how we start," says Martin. "We still base things on impression and instinct, which is something you can't put down in numbers and never will." Wondered why Martin rarely works with Angus

Hey everybody, look at us!!!
"We can't go far without getting stopped by someone," says younger brother Martin Read that and clicked on ‹ back to topics and make it snappy! |

They sure talk like they’re good at it.

"They'll be people wanting us to fail because when you've done well there are people who like to see you fall down, particularly with us being in the public eye " Wouldn't have to look far for clueless scumbags on here

People, at least some people, bitterly resent success in others who basically they regard as lucky upstarts.

The Racing Post headline seems disconnected from the article. Perhaps the writer had in mind 2,000 words of aftertiming on bets but mostly the talk is about buying horses, although even there not much insight is gained because the writer is not on the Post's bloodstock team.
It's interesting enough but could, should have been better. Or maybe I'm turning into a miserable old git. One of the two, anyway. |

I feel I qualify to join the club. Do I need to fill in a form or does my past forum record get me in?

Just marketing fluff, look at us how clever we are, give us some money.

Have to say they do very well, not easy buying
Cast off‘s. Wonder how much of the success they have is Down to Appleby? Yeah ramruna not a mention of the betting Side, if anyone is in a position to punt its them. But like Everyone, probably cant get 50 on. But they can’t say too Much, working for RUK. Hope they stick to horses in training sales And keep away from the yearling. Be eaten Alive there |

They obviously are successful and done very well for themselves. They likely face people in the sport taking poor assumptions about them due to their strong northern accents. Which I guess can be used to their advantage as well. Good on them. For the avoidance of doubt, I was teasing howard earlier as him and rico appeared to think that basing decisions on instinct was 'guessing' :)

Don't see any kind of link there Cider between foto betting "guessing" ( if you are winning it's good guessing ) and buying racehorses but of course you have found one.
|

"We don't use a lot of data and it's certainly not how we start," says Martin. "We still base things on impression and instinct, which is something you can't put down in numbers and never will."
Of course there's a link. Buying racehorses is gambling. They are stating that they can't beat the people with full information, as the horse will be priced up based on it. But they can beat them on instinct. It's exactly the same with betting on horses, photos or whatever. If the freeze frame on the line is available to everyone, I can't beat the market. Well, I don't even try. |
|
By:
Do they play a variation of the Dionne and Tommy show - Horses Under The Hammer?
|
|
By:
" ...they can't beat the people with full information, as the horse will be priced up based on it." That would be the case with horses rated at or above their correct rating. Yes there would then be no edge. There's rather more skill in identifying horses well under their potential rating than thinking the prices are slightly wrong in a foto finish. But if you think different you clearly play for pretty large stakes because you are not guessing

By:
"There's a real overlap with the way we think about betting and the sales."
|
|
By:
Not discussing how good (or bad) I am at betting, or the size of my staking. You (incorrectly) allege that playing without full information is effectively guessing. But my guess is that you'll never get it :)
|
|
By:
Their betting on horses and buying horses is based on how good other people think they are and how good they think they are. If you think that's anything to do with foto guessing u are nuts. The bottom line with this game is whether you make money and how much. You don't have to tell anyone else but that's all that counts. Win or lose.
|
|
By:
And if you find a way to do it don’t tell anyone.

A tip for aberdonia though.
Next time you copy and paste such a huge article do it in the started thread itself, I.e., as first responder not in the title area. What a pain having to scroll down to see the newest comment at every visit. ![]() |

"Punting was a big part of what we were doing but not now," says Chris. "It depends what commitments you've got and what you're comfortable with, but I'm going to have my third kid in a couple of weeks and it wouldn't suit my mentality."
Fair play to Chris, not risking his earnings on betting when he's got a young family to support. |

Wouldn't want to risk his nights at the Acomb Green ( York ) Indian either.
