I love delving through the old form books, but I wasn't quite around at the time.

Came across a few who probably had more to give when meeting their fate - Dunkirk, Buona Notte, Arctic Sunset and Wilhelmina Henrietta.

Anyone around at the time who can remember any other potential stars who lost their lives before they reached their peak?

Red Thorn. Same race as Buona Notte.

The Wiki page only seems to go back to the 70s so you have Lanzarote and Bula from that decade but not Buona Notte and Dunkirk, who were on a similar level.
There is another from the 60s. The Champion Hurdler,Anzio, who was probably past his peak as a hurdler but died novice chasing I think.

Bula was a top horse with a string of wins.

Buona Notte had a heart attack before hitting the fence but still died racing. Bula did have a long career.

Can anyone remember trying to spot the horse you backed in a big field on a black and white TV ? Laugh

Killiney but he succumbed in early 70s I think.

I can remember a fair bit of the 70's. Golden Cygnet was the very obvious one. In a great era he had the potential to be anything. At a different level, but Grey Sombrero was only nine when he was lost. The previous year he had won a terrific renewal of the Whitbread. Dondieu, another notable loss.

Knucklecracker. Beat the Irish horse Zonda in the Hennessey. He was my first favourite horse. Derek Ancil used to ride him. Probably trained him too.

Billy Bow collapsed and died after crossing the line in a valuable handicap hurdle at Newcastle on Hennessy day in Nov 1969. It was his 5th win in a row, he was carrying 12-4 and giving 10 lbs to next in the weights Celtic Gold, who wasn't far off top class. The race subsequently carried his name for a few years.
