yep same with the Ebor meeting used to take a week or two off in August and we would go down stay close by and travel through to York for the 3 days
maybe take in a Beverley meeting as well if we stayed longer - depending on funds etc those were great midweek fixtures, then it was Friday and onto the weekend... |

yup, used to be lovely, the Barry Cope fish wagon, the fruit stall in front of the stands..........alas never to return

Not for me anymore either in its current format, the anniversary been remembered today reminds me I was at the July meeting for the july cup the day of the London bombings only the previous day a roar went up at the course when live on the television screens the announcement was made London had been awarded the 2012 Olympics.

Barry Cope seafood - mussels, winkles, cockles, the lot; best ever racecourse food

Bringing the July meeting forward to its original Tuesday to Thursday would increase crowds and help with the congestion on Saturday With ascot and York also been on.
Unfortunately jcr are now obsessed with world pool. |

i remember the meeting back around 1985 , listening to the princess of wales stakes on the radio , and up to few days ago i was convinced id backed lanfranco at 8/1 to win , now i did win at 8/1 , but it seems the winner of the race was petoski, could anyone confirm if petoski did win at around that odds , or im going potty

yesthanks Haydn, i know he won but id like to know his odds in that newmarket race, a top class king george win against a super field, but was nowhere in sight when the greatest ever d brave won the 86 kg . oh the king george was a fantastic race in the 70s to the 90s

i remember nipping out of the office to watch the 86 July Cup (i had to google for the year..lol).....Id backed Last Tycoon....bloody loved that horse, Green Desert won....The bookies i was in was heaving, midweek.....jammed packed on a sunny midweek afternoon.....It really was better days...im sick of all the best races being compressed into a saturday, which has weakened their appeal immeasurably imo.

Have a peruse if you don't take my word. Carson rode a treble on that day, Tremblant was another of the trio. |

Lady Beaverbrook was fond of 7 letter named nags but not always Vouchsafe and Minster Son being 2 exceptions.
|
|
By:
Didnt Vouchsafe start at very long odds in a lot of his races, certainly latterly...?
pitched into races he couldnt win? |
|
By:
cardinal thanks , but in my mrmory lanfranco had won that race, i knew i had 50quid on the winner, i went around the office going nuts,

Glasgow Herald seems to have its entire archive available on Google News so its a decent resource for finding out facts about long ago ran races.

Another bonus to when it was Tuesday to Thursday was every 4 years the World Cup semi finals would take place during the fixture so a good days racing then some tea then the football, the one that stands out is in 82 sharpo winning a cracking July cup then west Germany beating France in the game where the French forward nearly had his head removed,if they had the dreaded var back then the goalie would have been arrested never mind sent off.

Sharpo what a horse for Jeremy Tree - best soft ground sprinter Ive ever seen
|
|
By:
Good afternoon north east
Without doubt the best soft ground sprinter I’ve ever seen but was very good on anything, after a low key debut I can’t remember where he was thrown into the temple stakes which was ran at sandown in those days ,he won at either 50/1 or 33/1 ,sharpo won three nunthorpe stakes which back then was called the William hill sprint the 2nd he beat marwell and moorstyle the first three home that day would all be in the best 5 sprinters I’ve ever seen,in his 3rd win at York he was ridden by the great Steve Cauthen who on dismounting said it was the fastest he had ever been on a horse. |

Yes would be great to have it today. The dross on offer made it really hard to find one for the naps comp and the one I chose is now drifting.

Yes it's easy to think back and remember when 'times were better' But ,as the song goes 'somethings
lost and somethings gained in living every day'. We tend to forget the down sides of the past. Racing has been most affected by the arrival of the internet and the ability to sit at home and play the horses and watch the races live while not paying the massive over-rounds of the bookies. It's like many things today. For example 50/60 years ago you could go to Venice, if you could afford it, and you would have seen the real Venice inhabited by real Venetians with Venetian culture. Today you can fly anywhere in Europe for pennies which is great except now, as a result, Venice and most other places are over-run with tourists and the Venetians and their culture have disappeared. It's now a giant museum! So up side: you can easy get to anywhere cheaply and quickly, down-side: the destinations are not as worth while going to. Take your pick. If 50 years ago you were given the choice when it comes to racing of the status quo or the ability to sit at home and bet on anything you want, with still the opportunity to attend live racing and being able to access film music and information at the push of a few keys what would you have chosen? It's taken me most of my life to realise there's not point in looking anywhere else but at to today! |
|
By:
There’s a lot of point in looking back there called memories also clearly there are people who want a midweek July meeting and a Wednesday derby without these type of discussions nothing would ever change.

Hi Jimnast was at York the day Pat Eddery won on him which I think was the 2nd of his three wins
used to go to the Ebor Meet a few times in early eighties - great times the July meeting is still good but the final day is lost a bit in all the Saturday fixtures |
|
By:
Yes pat eddery rode him for his first two victories in the nunthorpe you mention ebor week I actually think the ebor itself like the July cup gets a bit lost since been run on a Saturday.
|
|
By:
still think the best meeting of the year , and this has been changed from tues/thurs to wed / fri , is the dante meeting , and also i like the craven meeting
|
|
By:
It's amazing how much they managed to get right in the past, all totally ruined by greed. Dante meeting, Chester May meeting, July Meeting, Ebor meeting etc, Fred Darling on a Friday, Edward Hanmer, Tommy Whittle midweek etc.
|
|
By:
Internet. Instant betting, instant information.
I remember running down to the bookies to get a bet on a nag in the 2.00 at the July meeting, the intention being to rush home to watch it. I got home and the horse was already beat. lol. Captive Flower. |

By:
that week in april was super, tuesday , nell gwyn, wed , free hcap, thurs craven, then fri fred darling and the sat greenham

I agree. They mess up everything, at least reduce its quality, by allowing marketing stiffs, with no sentiment or knowledge of the game, to hold sway.

Excellent post rogerain, you will never see what lies ahead, if you
Keep on looking back?? And You can’t influence the past, thé internet Is the biggest thing to influence society, since the industrial revolution Some of it good, but lots bad, especially for the younger generation, it’s all they know, And most of it has had dire consequences for society ?? And the worst is yet to come ?? |
|
By:
But it’s their world now, I.e this internet generation
Where will it all take us, but It’s all part of the new way. Our generation is powerless to intervene,or advise and our Experiences of life, doesn’t tarry with theirs. Strap yourselves In ?? |

Going to be in Can Picafort Majorca for the July meeting, anyone know of anywhere to watch the racing?
|
|
By:
Did Barry cope do the seafood curry or am I thinking of someone else ? It’s Ludlow I remember it most from that might be a bit out of the way for him.
|
|
By:
G hall never been to can picafort but would be very surprised if you were unable to find somewhere to watch the horse racing even in sleepy Madeira there’s a pub that has it on.
