Field of Gold - What's it actually beat?

Point taken but he has avenged defeat by ruling court who aquitted himself well yesterday. Had to wait an age, not a clear run. He hasn't had an opportunity to meet his elders yet bar yesterday I think. someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I think the Sussex stakes was the right move for him anyway will probably win that to cement status as best miler in training in GB and IRE. Then go for the juddmnonte which if he wins will cement status as best in training. The manner of his victories have been bloodless. 126 about right I think.

The background is that the sport wants to hang it's hat on superstars. Nothing new in that, but these days we have an overdose of cheerleaders.   

We will get a much better idea at the end of the season. I am wary of going overboard about this year's crop, but Delacroix did take the Eclipse. Perhaps last year's bunch were not that good. Ombudsman was very much left-field, and his one big win came off a crazy pace.

It is possible that Field Of Gold could be very good in a relatively ordinary year. He needs to keep on winning.

He took ten lengths out of Windlord at Ascot who received  loads of plaudits yesterday.  Inferior race granted.  And Henri Matisse is decent and a Gp1 winner.  Can’t comment on his rating but he wins well and is certainly a classy animal.

I see he has a quote of 7-1 for the Great Voltigeur, but that's still 6 weeks away.

Notable speech 16's with paddy catches the eye.

I did say at the time that he’s beaten horses who don’t stay the mile. That looks good going away from 7f horses. AOB still has Twain in the Mile division or further surely another spanner in the works at some point.

Horses for courses NS? Not a clear run in the Queen Anne, Buick got done up like he’d done Shoemark in our Guineas!

Looked on the post he’s gone out from 8’s… maybe the French race for him? Plenty of 6/1 John for Hannon’s.

id love to get on now ante post each way before the race cuts up , but had a few really unlucky ante post bets no show this season, eg   lake victoria would surely have won the gns for any other trainer, henri mattise went france instead of hq, i backed lion in winter actually for the st james palace, that would have been interesting

It's true FoG has not beaten anything much as yet; the beaten horses have disappointed since. On a similar vein Baaeed was lauded a superstar (he might have achieved more but no superstar) until disappointed in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.

I know you’ve had some bad non runners for you so I get why you’d hold tight. Hannon is talking of Goodwood maybe now after the weekend more people will be keen to take him on? Having asked the same questions.

I thought Goodwood might be a negative for him, but hadn’t realised that Sandown has undulations? As well as the dreaded hill!

That’s right re: Baadeed I never believed it because of his win in France (The Moulin) beating a bad AOB horse narrowly. But how form lies and confuses sometimes!

At York he and the others will face two new unknowns. Unbeaten Daryz for Graffard could be one. He certainly has a turn of foot, it’s a massive jump up to what he’s faced and beaten so far. But that’s what we’re looking for - potential to excel over the trip, in the same way that Delacroix was still open show.

How easy it is after!

cant see more than 5 or 6 in this, hopefully the fav, rosallion . one of Aidens , perhaps a pacemaker, could the fillies lake victoria or porto fortuna turn up ?  docklands  perhaps

talking of fillies one of my fav sussex was Marling and selkirk ,   thinking of how Hoiles who sits on the fence when theres a neck in a finish, bloody super call there by sir peter calling the winner inside last 50 yds.

Elisjohn. Yeah just read that, think it could be the right call as long as he can lay up with them. His main weapon is that burst and turn of foot.

i am convinced that Field of Gold is an exceptional miler against 3yos but so far unproven against older horses. I would not bet against him though.

Marling was out of Marwell by Habitat while Selkirk was the last really good horse by Sharpen Up. Habitat was a top class miler as was Selkirk.

Sageform - I think exactly the same.

I thought after the Irish Guineas he had 130+ potential and since then, his Royal Ascot
rout has further convinced me that there's quite a bit more left in the tank.

There's just one small proviso - besides his perplexing Guineas defeat, he also failed to
deliver at Longchamp last October when if memory serves, it was thought he'd appreciate a
bit of cut.

As good as he undoubtedly is...maybe he lacks ground versatility and he might be one-dimensional?
I hope he puts that niggling doubt to bed - I think he will and I hope he becomes the first 3yo
miler since Frankel to hit that official 130 landmark.

FoG is head and shoulders above his cousins over 8f including the fillies, I firmly believe. Until he can beat Rosallion and friends over 8f emphatically he's not a superstar. However, a proper spanking to his adversaries in the Juddmonte eg Ombudsman/Delacroix and friends he'll be a superstar to me.

I don't think Rosallion's gonna be too hard a nut to crack.

I was a fan of the horse but he's been disappointing for me and I think he's
reached his ceiling - there's been a lot of hot air spouted and he's running
out of excuses, though I think he's still capable of winning in G1 company with
the surfeit of opportunities available nowadays...but maybe 7f could be worth a go?

Despite what his trainer believes, I think he's got a few pounds to find with
his best milers from around a decade ago like Canford Cliffs & Toronado.
I'd expect Field Of Gold to readily outpace him and put 3 lengths between them.

my thinking is that rosallions at around 6/1 is a banker eway bet now first 3, as itll be first 2 imo on the day , but im desperate to put a big bet on him , but  will he run ?, im 99% certain he will , but !   ps who remembers the great harwood miler of the similar name rousillion , had a big bet on him winning r ascot opening race i think , queen anne

Let's hope the majors in the betting turn up, and the condition is conducive and fair to all.

Just reminding myself of the form with Haatem who I would have really fancied but he is out for the season. Docklands is the logical choice of the 4yo milers.

Beaten mongrels?

I wasn't totally surprised by his defeat in the Sussex - it's a course that can catch horses out and he's had a busy enough start to the season - I would be inclined to wait for the Irish Champion next as opposed to the International if they're going up in distance. I still like the horse a lot and would expect better on a more conventional track.

I do think that there's undue haste to anoint the next superstar, however. City of Troy and Paddington were also lauded in a way that I thought was excessive (Baeed was justifiable, in my view).

I agree with all of the above post as after being lame, York might come a bit too soon, though Leopardstown can
often present its own troubles for a hold-up horse in what is often a messy race, so maybe he'll be snookered
for the time being as Ascot on bottomless ground is hardly an ideal target.

His mark of 126 at the moment is fair and I think he could reach that hallowed official 130 in time which seems
to be more elusive compared to a decade ago.

I really hope the colt remains in training as a 4yo because although I despise the insane media hype we get fed
from supposed experts, I think he's potentially the best (bar Baaeed in the 8/10f division) we've seen for a few
years but he'll need to reproduce what he's shown (and more) to justify a hike in the ratings - I think he can.
