Shades of AP at his best. Just now at Bangor. Owen's horse looked out of it, he still managed to galvanise it for 2nd. Big deal, so what? you say. It's what being a great rider is all about.

tries to make it look like the horse is going nowhere and beat as price jumps out and then starts to ride properly then f00ks up

Can't be accused of lacking effort late in races, but I still can't stand his Spencer rubbish at times in holding up horses deliberately. It works sometimes, but often fails too - just tactically silly at times.

It's not often that I rush to the winners' enclosure to give the winning jockey a round of applause, but I did at Newton this evening. However many Gold Cups, etc., Bowen wins, nothing will beat getting Stiletto to win a race at the 31st attempt.
They've tried everything with this horse: Gosden training it, Cobden riding it, blinkers, cheekpieces, wind surgery, Flat, hurdles, chases, and it just laughs at puny humans. Yet tonight it looked a total professional as it responded to pressure to run down the odds on favourite. Extraordinary. |

It reminds me of Vitas Gerulaitis beating Jimmy Connors at the 31st attempt.
“Nobody, but nobody, beats Vitas Gerulaitis 31 times in a row”. It was hardly a tough race to win, was it. I like the guy but he needs to achieve much more than this for me to give him McCoy-like accolades. |

I'm in Screaming and Pandora's corner. Privilege was backed as if defeat out of the question and always looked odds on until after the last. I can't remember what Privilege got done to but I remember thinking it would have been shorter if Sean Bowen wasn't on the only horse within sight of him.

His very moderate mount found enough to beat another very moderate mount (one win in 23 extremely moderate races ) ridden by an apprentice who looked under his arse like a Lester Piggott, thought he was safe but totally misjudged it and didn’t start working on his horse until too late. His experience won him the race, which is fair enough.

Not quite so brilliant there. He’ll have been beaten by a better horse probably.

Beaten again on the run-in, at Worcester 2.45.
I like the fella. He’s a very good and accomplished jockey but let’s not be calling him something very special. |
