In 2007, following allegations that Corinthians had been used to launder money, a Brazilian judge, Faustus Martins de Sanctis, ordered the arrest of Berezovsky, Joorabchian, Nojan Bedroud, cofounder of MSI, and four officials of club, including the chairman, Alberto Dualib.[18] MSI responded by saying that the judge's actions were "absurd, arbitrary and lacking legal backing",[18] while Joorabchian denied any wrongdoing and maintained that all payments made to Corinthians were "cleared through and approved by the Brazilian Central Bank".[19]

The Brazilian court papers setting out the evidence on which the warrants of arrest were issued stated: "MSI belongs and has always belonged to the accused, Boris Berezovsky".[20] Berezovsky denied any business connection with Joorabchian or MSI.[20]

In the light of these developments Corinthians broke off their association with MSI in July 2007.[21] There had already been a public deterioration in relations between the directors of the club and its investors centering on the involvement of MSI and Joorabchian in the team's affairs, and the fact that the club had been left owning only five members of the playing squad.[3][22] Tevez and Mascherano had been transferred to West Ham United and there had been seven different managers in 18 months.[3] In December 2007 Corinthians were relegated from Brazil's first division.[23]

The warrant for Joorabchian's arrest was suspended by the Brazilian authorities in August 2008.[24]

I was at the Guineas meeting last year in front of the stands in members. He had something running in a listed. He turned to his mate and shouted in a reasonably loud voice "If this gets beat we are f****d". Came 3rd. There is not a shadow of doubt in my mind that all of this will end in tears.

In fairness to Watnan, they're getting results and seem to be a lot more measured and strategic in how they go about things.

If they want the buzz they may as well punt. They have no chance in the short to medium term of breeding horses good enough to win the races they want to. They will win a few, but they will be ephemeral. Unless you are Coolmore/Juddmonte/Aga you have no chance of having broodmares good enough. I know they have to start somewhere but they need 10 times what they have invested now. And the geezer at Notts Forest who is in with them is riding for a fall as well. I wish them well as it all brings £ into the game. But it is a poor business model at present.

Is that the fella that ran on the pitch to have a go at the manager ??  Nobody in football would take him seriously after that imo. Get the manager back in the dressing room and tear into him by all means but to humiliate him on the pitch was unforgivable. Sounds like they deserve each other.

The Aussies bought Alcohol Free off Smith for nearly 6 million, and subsequently didn't even trouble the judge until retiring. Obviously there's a big reciprocal value at the sheds for a mare.

AMO does seem like a scattergun approach, as Ghostwriter is pretty exposed for what he is, and well known to pull too hard in his racing. So whilst a string of G1s seems unlikely, not really a stallion prospect either. Gelding after this season a possibility? What he does do is get the owners a ticket into the top middle distance races, without being a total rag.
Report impossible123 June 22, 2025 10:52 AM BST
How did Ghostwriter reach £2m in the sale? Were there many interested parties bidding for him? If so, was everyone of them bidding with their ego only? Or they knew something we did not.

I think Kia did say his son Max liked Ghostwriter a lot.

Report Cider June 22, 2025 11:08 AM BST
The auction is covered live on luck's podcast on yt if you're interested. It's not the world's worst buy but it's not easy to see what the strategy was. The horse won't form part of a breeding operation, is exposed and just below the top level. I suspect they'll need to cut him, but it's a big ticket price for a horse you're going to geld. Or possibly pot hunting abroad.
Report impossible123 June 22, 2025 11:11 AM BST
Regardless, and credit where credit is due Kia found a niche in the football market. Even his association with Suarez would have netted him a significant amount of dosh alone. And, the others? Similar bucks I'd reckon.

I wish him well. Irish and British Horseracing managed and dominated almost entirely by Coolmore is too predictable and ridiculously boring; the euphemism each year by AOB eg "never have anything like him; best we've ever trained, etc, has become too predictable and nauseating each season.
Report sageform June 22, 2025 1:17 PM BST
We have entered a new era when owner/breeders like Cheveley Park will sell their best colts if offered enough money. Wathnan and Amo have spent a fortune between them in the last 6 weeks to get some success at Royal Ascot. Coolmore, Juddmonte and Godolphin have spent far more for far longer. Juddmonte had just one winner from the 35 races. In my view they are inetrfering too much in running plans. I can't imagine that Andrew Balding is very happy with where Jonquil has run. French Guineas when he might well have won the Newmarket one and now over 6 furlongs which was bonkers.
Report howard June 22, 2025 1:34 PM BST
It's a great sell.  Gives you hope if you can get that kind of dough for a horse you would have been confident would never win a British G1.
Report sageform June 22, 2025 1:43 PM BST
The Chesham is not usually the best 2yo race of the meeting but I could see Humidity winning a few Group races next season if not this. Ulysses out of a Pivotal mare is OK but not a classic pedigree. Should stay 10 furlongs plus as a 3yo. Ghostwriter ran well enough but third in a Group 2 as a 4yo is not the sort of outcome you would hope for.

£2m for a horse that's not won for a long while; £2m could buy a very nice detached house (not in Dulwich Village) with a bit of spare cash for furnishing and probably a nice car too. I hope the horse is ok, and can do battle next time.
Report ASonOfWottonBassett July 10, 2025 7:58 PM BST
Isn't that what Luke Harvey said at Ascot as well. What's really worrying is that it wasn't even strategic. He admitted he bought it on an impulse based of his sons recommendation. At the yearling sales he said it was all about buying blue hens to build a broodmare band to tackle the big guys. A capricious character to say the least.
