Can easily be seen by looking at the stats of Shaumie Heffernan since he parted company amicably with Ballydoyle at end of 2023. Was riding at a SR of 22% in 23 with 50% in first 3, had been as high as 29% in 2020. In 2024 post O'Brien had a SR of 6% this season 4% and last 2 months 2.5%. To be fair to Shamie he's mainly been riding rags now he's freelance with only Johnny Murtagh putting him up on horses with much of a chance, (perhaps they were good pals in the weighing room.) Despite it being an "amicable" parting of the ways with Aiden and the boys and both parties stressing there had been no falling out and said they expected to work together again in the future, Shamie still hasn't had another ride for Aiden. He's had just two winners since beginning of May, one in a G3 for JJ Feane and a h'cap winner Fervent at 25/1 who runs in the last at Fairyhouse tonight, has an 11lbs rise for that easy C/D victory. Has what appears a decent chance on Edelak for Murtagh in the 8.00 3yo maiden and rides the fav in the first Cortina d'Amprezzo, personally i wouldn't be in a rush to back this fav at a short price as Shamie is only 3-77 riding 2 yos since end of July last year. Do hope he can get a winner or two though.
if they are well in/off any workrider worth his salt can win on one, they just never get the luxury. The only real problem is sometimes their handbrake is so sticky as it's never been off either.

I think it is over 90% the horse. Just look at some of the jockeys to have won the Derby. Over the jumps amateurs have won the Gold cup and King George. In no other sport women cannot compete as equals against men so I think it must be 90% plus the horse. Amateurs cannot win The Open or Wimbledon ect because the gulf is too big.

for a jockey the average price of their mounts is highly correlated with their strike rate skill (or lack of) relative to other pros is only a minor factor in their success
as a punter that 2nd point is the only thing that matters marginal gains or losses that a jockey offers

second again, yes that is exactly what points to jockeys being very much a 'muchness' in judging races/selections.
The male v female thing is so telling in comparison to any other sport.

Just shows give him the ammo and he can still do the job, really strong ride to peg back Tatum in the last on Fervent. Got within a head on Murtaghs Edelak against J O'Briens even money fav Delta in 8.00, had a 3rd at 14/1 earlier after getting 2nd on the first race fav. A decent night for him, just a pity he couldn't get Edelak up for the double.
