Lambourn Big Touch Landed?

I asked the question yesterday on the other thread regarding riding tactics. If they knew Lambourn was such a stayer why was he held up behind Delacroix over shorter at Leopardstown? I also can't see where Delacroix was 'murdered' after the start. The horse got a good break but was eased back over the next two furlongs by RM.

too many people think the boys know everything and shrewd gamblers aren't a big part of the mix.  Didn't back the horse because I hadn't twigged it had become a mudbath despite the fav being pulled out and Sparks Fly finishing an unlucky 3rd rather than 2nd earlier.  Thought after Chester St.Leger horse but I suppose it those conditions the derby almost becomes the Leger.

Lambourn was obviously well fancied but the idea that O'Brien's "lads" would send three horses for the Epsom Derby but one (the favourite) wasn't trying is laughable.

So they put their no.1 choice for the Derby out in front instead giving it a harder race?

Also it's highly likely they didn't KNOW it would be a middle distance stayer.  I would have been no more than hopeful if that. Dam was very quick and only won over 5f.

MJK haven't looked back at the race but you can always drop anchor in front. They knew he had the pace so a less harder race than forcing things with a stayer. The bottom line is expect these things to pan out like they have. That's how they train them.

Agree barstool , that's why he's little option most of the time in running a few in a race as the depth in quality is off the scale and improvement from one run to another at the stage of their careers can be enormous.

No doubt when the sun's shining in the height of summer the entire pecking order will look different as the development and knowledge of what's best for each individual horse will be more apparent.

So different as you could still easily see The Lion in Winter winning his 3yo group 1.

Coolmore ideally would have rather had Delacroix or The Lion In Winter taking the honours as both would have been the most marketable as flat stallions, both having Group winning juvenile form and being by stallions who themselves have marketable flat stallions at stud.

In today's climate Lambourn is a cert to start as a NH stallion, though hopefully he'll remain in training and develop into a Cup horse first. He's by a stallion who sires plenty of likeable types but has yet to sire a horse standing as a flat stallion in a top league racing country. In fact Australia himself could soon be switched to NH mode - his fee has dropped to those regions and as long as three years back, Rich Ricci sent a couple of mates to him.

To show how hard it is to market a stallion in a top league racing racing country - Luxembourg was a G1 winning juvenile, won a G1 as an older horse, yet he has started his stud career at The Beeches, not even being given a chance n the flat racing breeding sphere.

You’re correct he wasn’t. When you watch the trials they often aim to put distance between themselves and as they say hit the line hard. To scare the life out of everyone.

It seems that people don’t pay attention or listen, small details get missed. It was clearly hinted at the Lion dropping back in trip post Derby interview.

I’ve watched the re - run Delacroix wasn’t bulked or anything. He was behind the only two that finished off their races from way back.  TStud and New Ground. Who was actually bumped and carried out just after the start.

Ryan rode as though he knew that he’d not stay. Why was the lion there?

If you’ve heard of the long con then it makes sense that they were both there. The flip flopping favs took the eye away, the most simple trick in the book.

And asking why Lambourn was held up could be applied to TStud who was also held up in the Derby trial. The blagger must have 100% conviction of stride data to have been so sure that TStud @ 66/1 would reverse form with the 2/1 favourite - and not inside info.

But we aren’t all so privileged to walk the track with father and son (both having runners) before the big race.

It’s easy to take an opinion when you’re that close.

Some need to remove their blinkers. Whilst others  need to be tongue tied!
