I would pull him out. How we have got to this situation after months of dry weather is a joke.
Report stu June 7, 2025 1:32 PM BST
It's won twice on good and placed on GF?

Mind there is the consideration that there's the penalty of Buick on it to consider I suppose....
Report stu June 7, 2025 1:33 PM BST
* 3 times on good.
Report Whippin Piccadilly June 7, 2025 1:34 PM BST
It would be the right decision to pull him out. Keep him fresh for the Eclipse
Report 11kv June 7, 2025 1:35 PM BST

A good price for Field Of Gold if Ruling Court is rerouted to the SJP.

on times its nowhere near the "nearly soft" they are quoting

Report Whippin Piccadilly June 7, 2025 2:17 PM BST
There will be another day for RC. I believe The Lion in Winter will take a huge step forward from his comeback run in the Dante. I think the trip will suit him, but obviously the going is the unknown. At the prices it worth paying to find out if handles it. GL:
Report acey deucy June 7, 2025 2:18 PM BST
A Bog fair enough but that is decision is ridiculous.
Report barstool June 7, 2025 2:19 PM BST
Shame really, spoils the race to some extent.

Is Epsom now the new Goodwood?
Report uptheirons June 7, 2025 2:22 PM BST
If the COTC hadn't watered the Course we would probably be racing on Good ground and the horse would have run(not that I fancied it)
Report formoftheace June 7, 2025 2:23 PM BST
I did mention the watering can…
Report 1st time poster June 7, 2025 2:26 PM BST

they realised in the oaks milers get found out

Report wondersobright June 7, 2025 2:28 PM BST
given it didn't rain for 3-4 weeks straight through may would be firm ground at best w/o watering
Report wondersobright June 7, 2025 2:29 PM BST
but he should be aiming for g/f, targeting easy side of good for oaks day is total bs imo
Report 1st time poster June 7, 2025 2:29 PM BST
maybe their filly is a stone in front of their colts at home,so deided whats the point, came looking for a reason not to run
Report acey deucy June 7, 2025 2:29 PM BST
It's a guessing game.....Only one way to find out.

on form the 2000 is a lot stronger than the 1000

Report 1st time poster June 7, 2025 2:33 PM BST
he,s basically ruling out
champions day
arc weekend
most races in ire
going forward and anywhere with gd to sft in the description,
11 days till RA plenty of rain about next week/showers be lucky not have sft in description somewhere at RA
Report A_T June 7, 2025 2:42 PM BST
think the defeat of the filly drained the stable's confidence - would have been crushing to lose both derby and oaks with guineas winners
Report impossible123 June 7, 2025 2:45 PM BST
He does not need to run. I think Appleby could see delaying a decision would not help any backer or supporter of the horse.

The rain has arrived. Another 40 mins to the off.
Report ASonOfWottonBassett June 7, 2025 2:46 PM BST
Bottled it. You don't learn anything from them standing in their box "Aidan O Brien"
Report Try My Best June 7, 2025 4:55 PM BST
Why risk a 2.8 million classic winning horse on ground that it would hate on a khazi of a track. Correct decision made.
Report LoyalHoncho June 7, 2025 5:55 PM BST
Is it a risk?  Surely not physically.
People go on about the damage that the utter dominance of Coolmore, Willie Mullins, etc; does to racing but for me nothing does the reputation of Racing more damage than this nonsense - withdrawing a fav. from one of the highest profile races on the day of the race.
Very, very poor.
Charlie Appleby on The Chase - How does one trainer manage to win so many Derbys?
Answers - a. Entering and running as many top class horses as possible.  b. Declaring them non runners on the day of the race.  c. Licking Godolphin’s rss and doing what you’re told.
Report Try My Best June 7, 2025 6:00 PM BST
Correct decision made my friend
Report impossible123 June 7, 2025 6:02 PM BST
I'd not run him either if I was the owner. The horse is a Guineas winner; today's race is 12f. And, with the prevailing ground (soft/tacky), and a possible deluge in the offing the chance of him staying or winning is greatly reduced. There are so many good races he'd run in esp SJP and Eclipse around the corner.
Report Try My Best June 7, 2025 6:04 PM BST
The ground was obviously worse than the official going as plenty of the jockeys concurred with Buick's opinion.
Report LoyalHoncho June 7, 2025 6:08 PM BST
I take your respected word for it TMB.  With the emphasis on respected.
However, how potentially getting beat twenty lengths in a Derby on unsuitable going would damage the horse’s stud career beats me.
(having already bagged a classic).
I can’t believe there isn’t more consternation about it.  The abuse Nicky Henderson got when he withdrew some of his would seem appropriate in this case too.
Be lucky.
Report Try My Best June 7, 2025 6:16 PM BST
Everyone entitled to their opinion honcho. No problems there and can understand the disappointment of RC backers. I just think on this occasion and seeing the filly get beat in the Oaks (which I think they thought would bolt up) they took a longer term view for the horse. I would have made the same decision but I realise others would have let him take his chance.
Report impossible123 June 7, 2025 6:24 PM BST
I think it's an insult comparing Appleby to Hendo. Hendo would repeatedly provide positive update about the well-being of a horse for a targeted race, then not declare and/or switch its target last minute eg Lalumba.

Also, Hendo is sponsored by a bookie!
Report LoyalHoncho June 7, 2025 6:49 PM BST
Oooooh!  Get you. No bookies no racing you said the other day.  lol.
Report impossible123 June 7, 2025 7:00 PM BST
I said no racing = no bookies. Horseracing has provided a regular profitable source of funds for the bookies; fobt at present for bookies. As such, differentiate and regulate horseracing and fobt.
Report ThePomp June 7, 2025 7:08 PM BST
Nonsensical to run him. Myriad of reasons. Shouldn't be a debate.
Report ThePomp June 7, 2025 7:09 PM BST
Correct decision Appleby
Report A_T June 7, 2025 7:15 PM BST
probably shouldn't ever have been entered - was never going to win it

I hope we get a deluge of ground-softening rain throughout Monday night in advance of Tuesday’s St James’s Palace.
