Probably the most somber day I’ve ever been on a racecourse that grey day at Ascot they might as well of abandoned racing everyone just wasn’t interested in the racing.

isleham i think you are correct on this mostly ..but it is amazing how dancing brave crops up again and again despite 1986 being quite a long time ago and him being retired at three !

Zilzals: first race at Leicester absolutely hacked up. Diminuendo: first race Leicester missed the break completely then passed everything like they were stood still. See You Then : 3rd champion hurdle after speaking to Steve Smith Eccles at Leicester said he was a cert.

The jumpers are around for so long we see them as novices then they progress and give us so much pleasure just in recent years honeysuckle and gallopin des champs have received well earned tremendous receptions on more than one occasion very few flat horses get that ,amazingly shergar was applauded down to the start before the 81 derby and frankel received lots of great receptions in his 4 year old season especially at York and then his final race at Ascot which really was incredible.

Great call ribero with Devon ditty she was a cracking horse ,I had no interest in racing when Nijinsky was around but know all about him,a realistic achievement I would like to see before I pop it is a horse win the triple crown,I was at dony when oh so sharp won but it’s not quite the same.

the more i see these lists i realise 5 from each code is not enough . how could i miss out best mate ? or doran's pride, or triptych , or about 100 others ! interesting what jimnast said about the lack of horses from the present day dominant stables of mullins and o'brien . maybe we don't go to see them so much in the flesh . or maybe we feel that they just appear to be mostly all the same from a constant conveyer belt ?

I thought it was about your favourite ones you've seen in the flesh, not the best ones. Different thing altogether.

I mean, I've seen plenty of faster sprinters than Jacquelina, but none who freewheeled down the hill at Brighton and Chepstow with the sheer joy of that mare last year.
Similarly I don't doubt that I've seen one or two higher-rated chasers than Desert Orchid, but none who did it time after time from the front under 12-0, then logged it out up the Cheltenham hill in a bog.

Jimnast - Posted, then read down and saw you had Sergeant Cecil. On the day before the Ces, Was in the HR Museum at Newm. with Rod M. We watched a young Luke Morris practicing on the iron horse. Perversely he was practising with the whip, pulling/changing hands continuously. The old boy, supervising, from Michael Bell's stable was very enthusiastic about the lad's prospects. He wasn't a bad judge.

I included Rury Roc in my list. You've got to favour a horse whose owner/trainer/breeder was once quoted as saying: "I love this horse - he bought my house."
I'm never going to feel the same affection for one of those Stupidnames De Francais who win the Gold Cup but cost the price of a house.

I couldn't name 5 since I've only been to 2 racecourses in my life - Musselburgh and Longchamps (talk about extremes ) so I was in Paris for the Prix du Moulin in 92, and was standing close to the winning post as Henry's smashing filly ALL AT SEA saw off the St James Palace winner Brief Truce.
My huge disappointment about that day was that I was expecting to see the legendary ARAZI in that race, but he was withdrawn late on

I remember the jersey stakes that year a Leicester maiden winner a short priced favourite for the jersey stakes the books wanted to lay the punters didn’t care what price they took ,the punters won.
Of memory I think he was rated higher than nashwan that year whilst as good as zilzal was I didn’t agree with that decision.

you could fill a list with much-loved Milton Bradley horses, Andrew. The Tatling, Mighty Marine, Yangtse-Kiang, Grey Dolphin
Screaming FBTW, agreed. If i remember correctly, i think Offa's Mead won at a decent price before the Ascot Bovis race ? I have it in my head 16/1 and 20/1 respectively, but ageing memory etc. I think he also liked to race away from the field.

Platini, i've never been to Musselburgh, or Scotland for that matter, but i've seen a lot of Arcs dating back to Detroit in 1980. My favourite festival meeting, love the place and try not to miss it. Not sure if i was there in 1992, but i was working in Sweden then (as opposed to Indonesia in 1994-1998, so quite likely. If you get chance, go to a non-Arc group card meeting, no crowds, generally only 20 euros entry and quality racing.

My memory of mole board was the day he ran in the sun alliance hurdle it was in the days when the of course firms had started advertising most festival races in there morning advert in the sporting life up until the day only the champion hurdle, gold cup and triumph hurdle were had anti post markets ,they also had wide variations of prices unlike today anyway a couple of firms went around 6/1 mole board very few had credit accounts so the only way to get these prices were in the betting shop well in Cheltenham that morning you would think it was grand national day such were the ques to get a bet on and almost everyone had betting slips with mole boards name on at the price,as far as I know everyone got on ,the horse was sent of quite a bit shorter and I think finished 4th or 5th jumping the last with every chance as he did in the next 5 champion hurdles.

Moving on a couple of years you could get prices the evening before if you went in the queens hotel and get a bet they were great days no arbing just punters backing there opinions against the bookmakers.

"I'm never going to feel the same affection for one of those Stupidnames De Francais who win the Gold Cup but cost the price of a house." Couldn't agree more Screaming. One of my absolute pet hates down the years is the borderline abuse of our heritage that takes place in the naming of racehorses. But its not just the D'oudairies, the De Champs and the Collanges, that merge together in the mind. I lost patience with the Mukk, Mubs and horde of AAs in the Shadwell empire that have become so hard to recall as time moves on. And then there's the Minella whatevers, the Gabriel glut that seems thankfully to be at an end but left nothing behind in the memory. Right now I have a dislike for the Godolphin trend of just being plain boring. Noble this and Native that, not to mention the pickapronoun trend in the Magnier catalogue. Coolmore just about get away with the Artist and writer encyclopaedia. I know who **** was, (but sruggle with Was).
