Added to Goodwood’s race programme as a Derby trial, this contest was named after the popular stayer Predominate, who lifted the Goodwood Stakes three times (1958-60) and, remarkably, the Coutts Goodwood Cup in 1961 at the age of nine. The Predominate Stakes was first staged in 1970 when the Queen’s Charlton was victorious under Joe Mercer for trainer Dick Hern. The same trainer saddled the brilliant Troy to land the spoils in 1979 en route to amost emphatic victory in the Derby.
Top-class international stars have run at Goodwood such as Ibn Bey, victorious in 1987, who went on to win the Irish St Leger and was runner-up in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Classic, America’s most valuable race, Minster Son, the last ofHern’s six winners, added Classic victory in the 1988 St Leger, while the 1992 hero Jeune, trained in England by Geoff Wragg, secured a famous triumph in the 1994Melbourne Cup. Pentire, another Wragg horse, won the Predominate Stakes in 1995 and added the Irish Champion Stakes as well as the following year’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Dubai Millennium is right up there with the great champions that have graced the Goodwood turf. The Godolphin horse was successful in the 1999 renewal and went on to Group One glory in the Prix Jacques Le Marois and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over a mile later that year, as well as capturing theDubaiWorld Cup, the world’s richest race, and Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2000. Championship Point won the most recent staging of the Predominate Stakes in 2006 and Mick Channon’s charge returned to the Goodwood winner’s enclosure when successful in the Betfair Heritage Handicap at Glorious Goodwood in 2007. Last run as a Group Three race. |
