When he was elected a lot of my frinds were delighted. I told them that after six months he would be criticised by all and sundry in the press and on the streets. I am 74 and cannot remember any prime minister who was generally popular . They become an Aunt Sally for everyone who expects the country to be better than it is. Tony Blair in his first few years is the only one with a semblance of popularity but look where that went!
It doesn't help when PMs invariably surround themselves with ministers who act like clowns , swindlers, morons or big heads. Sometimes all 4 at once.
Yes minister should be compulsive viewing in all British Schools !

Thatcher was polarising but undoubtably popular until the mid 80's. Blair was the most popular I can remember until he got into bed with Bush...

Now, apparently a two-way agreement for EU youths to enter the UK (with no restriction).
