At this time of the year I always remember some of the great races and punts.
Back in the day a group of us took 66/1 on the number of finishes after watching a decimated field in the Topham.
They did this every year.
Cant remember exactly how many finished but it was probably 7/8. Bet landed.
Cant see  them offering any value this year if indeed in the unlikely event they offer any at all. Evens 30-32?

We do not have horseracing bookmakers anymore. They've been replaced by forensic turf accountants ie entities which weed out non-profitable/non-losing individual accounts through bet restriction, account closure, overzealousness of AC enforcement, withholding funds (illegally) using kyc, etc. The main interest of these entities is promoting and delivering fobt - the crack cocaine of gambling.

Horseracing in the UK is on a spiral decline for the last 15 years at least, and is heading towards implosion; the BHA is ineffective and toothless, at times clueless.

It's nothing new, impossible. The 'establishment' would rather kill things off as long as it allows them to pursue their high status ideologies. Of course they had a short segment on the RTV morning show about had the national lost its appeal. The two with their posteriors fused to seats on the gravy train were effectively saying, nothing to see hear and conclusions can't be drawn on a single race (last year's). lol. I'd bet 1/4 it won't be much different this year, they'll tip around for nearly 4 miles and see who's the fastest in a sprint at the end. The race has been killed by the sanitation, but the patient isn't quite dead yet. People can debate that was the right or wrong thing to do, but they are in denial if they think it is a race that the nation tunes into and bets on, like it once was.

Did Mr McCoy (I do not agree with his bestowment of a knighthood. He's invented nothing, done nothing medical or social)  not state on tv immediately post last year's renewal post the win of "I Am Maximus" it was the best Grand National ever? That can only be pocket-talking on behalf on his paymaster ie JP.

The recent BHA appointments eg Mr Rust and Ms Harrington were reckless and non-horseracing conducive. The former was a bookie rep (a promoter of fobt and poor racing); the latter a lightweight and lacking incisiveness and vision.

It is a bit strange really as when I just searched the biggest horse race in the world it suggests the Grand National is number 1 followed by the Kentucky Derby and then Melbourne Cup.

Different sources seems to suggest it has viewing figures worldwide of 400 million up to 800 million with 500-600 seeming the most quoted.

So the UK and BHA are responsible for a traditional race which is the biggest in the world, and for some reason it is the one they are changing the most. Obviously safety is critical but it is surely its uniqueness which is why it was number 1 in the world, as its never been about the best horses competing and quite often stories, characters and horses that loved its uniqueness such as Red Rum and Tiger Roll.

I know lots of people in racing are on the 'gravy train' and have to agree and say what they do, but you wonder what the race will look like in 30 years time or if it will even be there if someone at some point doesn't stand up and say its the biggest horse race in the world and is that because people love watching the uniqueness of it and the drama that comes with it.

newsboys just told you, the  national  is biggest sales day of the yr for red tops,so you think it's a coincidence and there,ll buying red tops because they've ran out of toilet paper on the same day every year, 99% of once a yr punters wont even no how much the race has changed and in their eyes the more finishers the better, if your a once a yr punter why wouldn't you want a dozen in with a chance over the last, instead of 2 or 3 ?

The print circulation of the Daily Mirror dropped below 200,000 in February for the first time since the Edwardian era.

The Daily Mirror saw its print circulation decline to 196,150, a drop of 4.5% compared to January and of 16.4% since February 2024.

Sister title the Sunday Mirror was down 1.5% month on month and 17.3% year on year to 144,733.

The Daily Mirror’s cover price has more than doubled since 2010 to £1.70 per day, a tactic which has defended circulation revenue while at the same time possibly hastening decline.

Let's have chariot racing like in the film Ben Hur. Maybe the winner could take home £5m, given the colossal £500k being offered by a bookie to the winning most jockey of races broadcast on ITV. Only a bookie could afford or sufficiently foolish to offer this colossal sum.

I've little doubt this generous sponsorship is to promote fobt clandestinely. And, the BHA is keeping schtum as usual.

There's no way in the world that betting on the grand national for once a year punters isn't in rapid decline. Stating that the mirror might sell more on that day than other day is no different to politicians' gaslighting. It may well be factually true, but the bar is plummeting.

impossible, like I stated, the sanitation might be or might not be the right thing to do. But they are making it just another big money handicap, and killing the usp. My point is, why try to gaslight people that it isn't. This what we deal with now in public discourse in 2025, people living grand lies.

cider thinks his bubble is the real world, the same 20 members of my family having a once a yr be t on thew national are the same 20 who did 30 yrs ago,the difficulty of the fences,no of runners etc,etc made no difference 30 yrs ago and no difference today just as they couldn't give a fook about the 100,s of things cider bedwets about 24/7

your missing the point as usual if more people make the effort leave their home ,hand over a knicker for a red top on national day,if there were no red tops at all, they,d source the info/national field ,runners etc from somewhere else
Report Cider March 23, 2025 12:28 PM GMT

You were trying to use the misleading stat to support your argument. Sales of daily papers mean nothing now. So if the GN is the biggest sales day for the mirror, it has no bearing on the wider appeal of the race.
Report 1st time poster March 23, 2025 12:33 PM GMT
so you think they get it delivered once a yr ?
the point he,s making is people are prepared to go out of their once a year to make the effort to buy a red top and hand a quid over, something they don't do the other 364 days a yr,which suggests if red top DeSales went to zero ,that same people would once a yr as far as racing is concerned sourse their info online,MSM,betting shops etc,etc
Report Cider March 23, 2025 12:42 PM GMT
Obviously, to draw any conclusions whatsoever you'd need to know exactly how much more it does on that day, compared to the rest of the year. I doubt it's much at all, you're looking at the real oldsters maintaining traditions. If I remember to, I will get the April stats compared to March.
