Great story there that he nearly bought the winner’s sire as a 1-year-old but it failed the vet. He said he would have gelded it!

Should really name a prominent Festival race after him,
as a recognition for all he's done for NH racing.

They'll do it after he's gone, but I believe it would be nicer while he's still here.

They won't do it though

Met him at Newbury one Fri afternoon, was just stood on the grandstand viewing steps, he stands next to me against a rail.

Was watching one of his run, heavens kitchen or devils kitchen or something.

Had a few words, photo with him.

Gentleman, all this just before a race he had a runner in. Also just in the regular grandstand not members or anything.

Agree, should have a race after him.

I would hate to get his training bills every month.

Wonder what his total horse racing bills add upto before any winning prize money deducted.

When you can't afford to keep your parents in a decent care home remember this article:

I believe he’s been going there 50 years now.
He started in 1975 when 1 of the days was cancelled and he played poker all day at a pub in Stratford on Avon!

Care for the elderly or lack of it is one of the biggest scandals of the century, hundreds and hundreds of old folk forced to sell their homes by the government just to line the pockets of these big corporations.

£2k a week to look after my Mother ( dementia ) if she chose to go into care. Luckily I had just retired when she was diagnosed and caring for her at her home.

There is no doubt that a lot of trainers, big and small, have benefited from his patronage. In addition, when he is on course in Ireland he comes across as a man of the people strolling around and he has done wonderful work through his charitable foundation. However, from a punters viewpoint he is an absolute nightmare. Between Binocular's champion hurdle shenanigans, Noble Emperor in Limerick a number of years ago, Iroko in Cheltenham only this year and countless horses jig jogging around at the back of the field to get a very favourable handicap mark it is impossible for an ordinary punter to back the 'green and gold'with any confidence. I am backing horses for more than 50 years and one of my golden rules is not to back any of his horses.

"The real point here is that we have a scandal at the moment where, every year, 30-40,000 people are having to sell their houses to pay for care costs."

Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, in an interview with the BBC, 10 February 2013

"I repeat no-one, again NO-ONE, can be forced to sell their home to pay for their care"

Paul Lewis, BBC Radio 4 presenter, on his blog, 16 July 2012

An Englishman's home is his castle, so the saying goes.

But, if our politicians and our media are to be believed, property owners are under threat, as councils "force" the elderly to sell their houses to pay for the care that they need in their old age.

Under the current system, anybody who needs to be cared for in a residential home and who has more than £23,250 in assets to their name is required to fund their own care. This means that many people end up selling their house in order to release a large sum of capital - a scenario that is often described as grossly unfair.

The Dilnot report into the future of social care funding produced a model that shows how people who need care risk seeing their assets depleted by up to 80%. (With a cap on care costs in place, an individual would find themselves less exposed financially.)

That was 12yrs ago, guessing things are a lot worse. Sad

And yes I know A_T nobody is FORCED to do anything but in these cases their are no options.

When JP McManus is having his horses distributed to trainers who is Top of The Totem Pole?

Is it Willie, Gordon, Nicky or someone else?  is there a pecking order?

kerryboy aint wrong. i dont go near them either and its frustrating when they win but still not worth the anguish when they are tailed when you are on

jp the biggest private charity in europe. he keeps lord nose how many trainers afloat. enda bolger and j o'neill just two and theres plenty more. not knocking him at all but he might be super-smart in the currency markets but when it comes to buying horses hes being very badly advised. frank berry stealing a living

he spends more than anyone and the return is lamentable. ricci, cheveley park and even the donnellys leave him standing. although cromwell might change things if he gets a few more

To be fair to Jonjo he gave JP a Gold Cup winner with syncronised and a Grand National winner too with Don't Push It.

Not sure what happened but doesn't seem to have has many there.

He's got most of it back from the bookies. The trainers do what they're told. He tells them where and when the horses run, and when they dont win. He's far from a charity.

Should the authorities be having serious questions with him regarding the source of his wealth? From humble beginnings to a fortune beyond anyone's wildest dreams and nobody actually knows how it actually happened. No questions ever asked, great for the sport, lovely fella etc etc

I'd be great for the sport and a lovely fella to boot, if I had that number of horses in training and wealth behind me.

Anyone ever worked out just how much he's paying in training fees every month?

Swept under racing's rug like any other awkward subject the sport has facing it.

You'll often find that getting that wealthy from humble beginnings is often as a result of crime.

It's right to be able to ask questions and be transparent surely?

How did he manage to access cheap state owned assets at well below market price, and in huge quantity? Is this not illegal and corrupt "stealing" assets belonging to ordinary Russians? His israeli and Portuguese citizenships were "bought" using his wealth and might.

TBF Somerset can you quantify which crime can turn into billions from humble beginnings other than commodities or currencies? Dealing in tarmacking drives or scrap metal would not not seem to fit the criteria you appear to apply to JP?

Criminal activities and organised crime knows no boundaries.

Ok so you feel you can accuse an individual without evidence but can't explain zilch to billions which even organised crime would struggle to attain?

JP has probably gone through the most stringent checks and balances throughout his life than most ever will.
