When asked why he was retiring David Elsworth said   "racings not fun anymore" i know what he means and i'am sure that lots of racing people that have watched the sport over many years will agree.
What's going wrong?  I can put one suggestion forward.
Cheltenham Gold Cup winning trainers  ,from 1978 to 2000 (23 years) 21 different trainers
                                                                  2000 to2024  (23 years) 14 different trainers
Epsom Derby winning trainers               from 1999 to2011  (13 years)  10 different trainers
                                                          from 2012 to 2024 (13 years)    5 different trainers

The fact that big yards that were once always trying now are as blatantly bent as most of the smaller ones and the sickening feeling when you realise you are on the non trier, eg Mullins and Henderson .

Its not cheap to go racing and lots of these courses have poor or no wifi too. That should be a huge red flag as the younger generation and punters want internet access these days to keep in touch with friends etc. Look at the crowds at the festival. They have dropped considerably but in some ways you reap what you sew. Prices have gone crazy to get in there and drinks and bad food are ridiculous costs.  There are lots of activities out there that are competing but racing is failing to move with the times.

Racing needs two things: Serious pruning and major promotion which should include a large reduction

in prices.

Just look at the Triumph Hurdle tomorrow. 11 out of 18 trained by Willie Mullins. It’s garbage.

Horse buying agents make sure that the best horses never come across the channel, only to come to Cheltenham

lower quality in all aspects of the sport, too many races, too expensive, shocking tv coverage, too much catering for drinkers and eventers rather race goers.

chester is a prime example- used to go  reguarly - i never go now -shocking now

No point asking old farts like Elsworth and us on here. The internet has changed the world not just horse racing. But racing hasn't taken it on board.  There should be a  different way to easily  bet on course with phones.

It appears race courses are protecting bookies by having no wifi. Little do they realise they are in the process of bringing their own business down instead. Typical thinking of race course management. Some time ago I sent a text to Ludlow Race course asking when they were introducing a free local wifi . They didnt bother to respond. At that point they lost me forever.

Yeah they don't look long term.  They are stuck with thinking in the 20th and even 19th century.  Providing we can bet what we want online bookmaking on course offers NOTHING to punters. The sooner tracks realise this the better.  If they want to keep a handful for the sight of them fair enough but they are not an interesting sight like they used to be with colourful betting receipts and tic-tacs.  Be better to get rid.

It has not lost its appeal after watching a ride like Cobden just gave Caldwell Potter and the joy on the faces of 6 brave owners who paid a small fortune for it.

Racing will slowly die with us on here. The pups only bet on soccer and have so much more to spend their pocket money on than a visit to the racecourse. The vast reduction in turnover on here over the past 2 years is staggering. Remember this, progress never stops and only moves in one direction...forward.

Another great story there though with Doddythegreat. No other course can compete for great stories and continuity.

If one cannot bets or have been made to jump over hoops by bookies eg bet restriction, id verification post winning, AC, etc, the game will be on a spiral decline. In addition to this equation only a few big stables and owners are calling the shots.
