Zafonic was very good from Juddmonte. Zee Zee Top was from the Meon Valley Stud who are also very good breeders. A name from my childhood that sticks in my memory is Zarathustra who appeared in many pedigrees. Anyone know who owned and trained him?

Just looked up Zarathustra. Best Timeform rating 131. He was bred in Ireland and passed to the breeders son who initially sent it to Michael Hurley for whom he won the Irish Derby and Leger and the Royal Whip. He then went to Cecil Boyd-Rochfort as a 5y winning the Goodwood Cup and then after recovering from injury, the Ascot Gold Cup in 1957 ridden by Lester Piggott. He won over distances from 5 furlongs to 2.5 miles so yes, a very good horse beginning with Z. He did stand at stud producing Crozier but then was sold to Japan where he died after just 3 more seasons. The Aga Khan had a a lot of horses beginning with Z of which Zarkava was probably the best.

Zarathustra before my time but I think he won the Ascot gold Cup.
Some might remember a filly called Zaizafon trained by Gosden.. 3rd in the QEII. Dam of Zafonic and Zamindar [Zarkava]. More recent.. Zenta who won the gr. 1 4yo hurdle at Aintree couple of years ago for Mullins. Zminiature, who won the Brocklesby last year but failed to train on. Put Dylan Cunha on the map as a trainer I think. If you're doing the 'Y's next, I'm sure we've got plenty of those. |

Pebbles. I felt she was very underrated for what she achieved but I will never forget the way she went past Sea Anchor and Commanche Run in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket on the bridle. And then of course her brilliant win at the Breeders Cup.
|
|
By:
She also won the 1000 guineas and took part in the coronation stakes at royal Ascot where Terry ramsden had the million pound bet .
|
|
By:
Philip Robinson had the choice of rides at royal Ascot he opted for Katie’s leaving lester to ride pebbles Robinson chose right.

Zeta`s Lad is a terrific shout. How did I forget that great horse. Michael Buckley`s I think.
Cheers Ronnie. Hope you are well too. |
