Most of the big Irish owners are gamblers in one way or another. Dennis Smith, Michael Tabor, the Power family. Some moved from traditional bookmaking to merchant banking and trading in shares and currencies but still essentially gambling. Nothing wrong with that.

A linked story to Novellus.  Maurice Regan is Newton Anner Stud.   Is this a battle involving Coolmore?

Billionaire developer Luke Comer helps ‘Riverdance’ star Michael Flatley in battle to keep his mansion
Dancer reportedly secured €7m loan from Comer and developer Maurice Regan to help him retain Castlehyde Estate home

Michael Flatley is putting up part of his whiskey business as collateral for a loan from billionaire Luke Comer, the Irish Independent can reveal.
He put the assets up as security just days before a crucial High Court hearing last week where he has been trying to retain control of his home, Castlehyde Estate, in Co Cork.

The move by Flatley Whiskey comes just weeks after reports that Mr Comer was preparing to help the Lord of the Dance star with his legal battle by providing a €7m loan to the dancer, alongside developer Maurice Regan.

Mr Comer made his fortune after building up a multi-billion euro property empire across Europe, America and Africa over the last two decades with his brother Brian.

Flatley Whiskey launched last year, with its first product called “The Dreamer”. Mr Flatley said at the time that the whiskey would be launched in the United States last summer, with a worldwide release this year.

New company filings for Flatley Whiskey show that a Luxembourg company called Galveston Investments last month secured rights over some assets of the whiskey company.

Galveston Investments is owned by Mr Comer and its latest set of publicly available accounts show that it had assets of just over €1bn at the end of 2023.

Michael Flatley lawyers claim a ‘deal has been done’ to purchase his Cork mansion at centre of dispute
Mr Flatley has been embroiled in a legal action related to a €5.6m loan that was made in 2023 to his Blackbird Film Productions company by a firm called Novellus Finance. That loan required monthly repayments of €67,000, the High Court has been told.

Novellus Finance claimed that Blackbird Film Productions defaulted on the loan – a claim Mr Flatley has denied.

Mr Flatley had used his Cork mansion as security for the loan. Due to the alleged default, Novellus Finance attempted to appoint a receiver over the property, but the dancer secured an injunction in December to prevent that.

Lawyers for the dance star and the lender were before the High Court last week as Mr Flatley sought the continuance of that injunction.

Lawyers for Mr Flatley and Blackbird also told the High Court that “a deal has been done” to buy the Castlehyde Estate, with a neighbour agreeing to buy it. However, that claim was disputed by lawyers for Novellus Finance.

The two sides are due to make another appearance before the court this week.

In January, the Business Post reported that Mr Comer and fellow developer, US-based Maurice Regan, had agreed to provide a €7m loan to Mr Flatley in a deal to help him retain his country house and repay the Blackbird loan.

Before Christmas, Mr Regan also helped developer Gerry Gannon emerge from under the shadow of Nama by financing his debts. Mr Gannon is one of the famed “Maple 10” group of investors who were given loans in 2008 by the doomed Anglo Irish Bank to buy shares in the institution.

Seems to have a finger in every pie. I could understand why those trainers and the industry laud him, but I find it a lot harder to understand why any puntery would admire the way he operates. The lack of information, and secrecy is like something from another century. The game has tried to embrace in recent years, but he doesn't seem to have done anything at all in that direction. He employs Frank Berry, but the media seem petrified to ever engage him, even though on many occasions he is right in front of them. What's the point in employing a spokesman who hardly ever says anything?

I may be in a minority of 1 here DD, but I quite like a little subterfuge and guesswork in racing. You can have too much for sure, but it adds interest to the game in my view. It also rewards those who like to interpret the plans of owners/trainers based upon past habits and wee hunches. JP gets the balance right in my view. Sure there are some obscure punts in Ireland now and again but they are quite often to give the smaller trainers he employs a bone to chew on from time to time. At the risk of blowing my own trumpet, and by way of contrast, having done my cods on Joyeuse at Cheltenham in December it seemed obvious to me she would be laid out for Newbury. Like Iberico the year b4. I don't refer to these to appear a smartypants but to illustrate that it is rewarding working things out for oneself rather than being spoon-fed with (often) bland information. Just a personal opinion.

thank goodness racing has not followed Football, Tennis and Cricket in forcing participants to do press conferences before and especially after an event. Can you imagine it?
Nicky Henderson sitting in front of the assembled press on Tuesday at 12.00.
"Well Mr H. how far is Constitution Hill going to win by? How much money has Mr Buckley placed on the horse?"
Nicky. "We are so relieved that he is actually here in one piece. If he is in the first 3 we will all be delighted". If we have any cause to be concerned about the going of course he won't run.
Reporter:  And what about Jonbon tomorrow. What have you told JP? Or more important, what instructions has he given you?
Nicky. I could not possible answer that.
Report sageform March 5, 2025 12:29 PM GMT
Absolutely DP. It is what makes the sport so fascinating. If every race ran to form, no punter would make a profit. Bet on trends and on experience. The Joyeuse example is a good one though. How come Iberico Lord hacks up one year but with only a 7lb rise (after the 3lb allowance) he is tailed off the next year over the same course and distance? Answer: because he was there to keep Joyeause's weight down. As it happened Lump Sum carried the same top weight of 11.11 so it didn't matter but that is the reason IL ran.

Donegal,

Thats very true, as long as you find them before they go favorite in the RP overnight and get napped by Pricewise!!! Joyeuse and Iberico both favorites. no big profit there.

I think these plots are actually ruining the game for the vast number of ordinary punters(who in total place most of the money), as we are up against very unfair inside information. Eventually this sours punters leading to lower turnover.

Its actually illegal on the financial markets, being known as INSIDER TRADING.

The problem really is stewards not handing out strong enough bans for non triers. i.e Failing in the main job objective. This will never change, as most stewards have been awarded their roles via nepotism.

JP now is different from JP back then.

Now he is more or less openly chasing the top races with good horses. Then he was secretively plotting up bad horses to win even worse races. He is now a lot richer and a lot older (and survived a cancer scare) and has better advisors than Frank Berry buying up any old yak as a charity for incompetent Irish horsemen.

JP also does his bit, and a lot more than his bit for charity. Though if he actually deigned to live in Ireland and pay taxes there, he'd be doing even more (subject to your views on the competence of successive Irish governments, I suppose).

Report Ramruma March 6, 2025 3:47 PM GMT
Everything JP owns will be well backed for everything, or at least the price will be cut just in case, and then maybe drift out on the day. They don't run any faster just because they wear green and gold hoops.
