It's probably a long list tbf, Burdett Road was rated 101.

Would be interesting to know how many of those 100+ ex flat horses ended up with a hurdle/chase rating of over, say 140?
Report GEORGE.B February 8, 2025 10:59 AM GMT
There's no official rating given for Royal Gait on the RP website, but if he had one then he must have been just about highest rated off the Flat to have gone hurdling?

Alderbrook?
Report differentdrum February 8, 2025 11:06 AM GMT
I would have thought Admetus would have been rated higher than Royal Gait.

I do vaguely recall Admetus running in a Novice hurdle at Newbury on the telly on a Saturday, Francome aboard for Winter. Have just checked up and found that he actually ran over hurdles on four occasions, ( 77/78 season), well beaten every time. He’d won the Washington D.C in 1974, and was now eight years old so clearly not the horse of old.

Or turn it round .... Wicklow Brave 142 Supreme run , then a year later ran on flat and progressed to a mark of 115 ...Absolutely one of my favourite horses , once they sussed out his quirks .

Sea Pigeon ? Not sure what his flat racing was when he won the ebor under 10-0. Altho no doubt his flat rating improved over time after he went hurdling

Aurelius won the 1961 St Leger before becoming the first horse to win at Ascot on the flat, over hurdles and fences. It also finished second to Saucy Kit in the Champion Hurdle, but was disqualified. Aurelius had a rating of 134 in 1962

I think it was Michael Roberts who about 20 years ago had a gr1 winner off the flat go over hurdles. Though it was definitely a permit holder/ small trainer who used to run pointers as well but I can't swear on it being Micheal Roberts.
If someone has a good database they will be able to find it.
The trainer was a most unlikely candidate to have a gr1 flat winner running from their yard.
The horse did no good nh though.

After fertility problems at stud the nag that benefitted from Royal Gait's disqualification in Ascot Gold Cup went into training with Martin Pipe but sadly was fatally injured.

my first thought was as above alderbrook, a slightly weirder one might be theatreworld that prob wasn't rated highly on the flat initially but ended up over 100 after going over hurdles, obv never got the limelight but would have won a couple of ch hurdles had it not been for his stablemate
Report jimnast February 9, 2025 11:52 AM GMT
Theatrewords best flat performance was when 2nd in the group 3 Branford stakes ,the thought he might have won 2 champion hurdles make you realise what a load of crap istabraq beat.

From Chat GPT:-
Royal Gait was given an official rating of 130 on the Flat in France. He was an outstanding stayer, winning races like the Prix du Cadran and the Prix Royal-Oak before controversially being disqualified in the 1988 Ascot Gold Cup.

After switching to hurdling, he famously won the 1992 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham for trainer James Fanshawe.

yes jim, it wasn't vintage in behind

the "sir" horse impossible refers to may be sir erec which i think broke down in the run?
Report verbotene liebe February 9, 2025 12:17 PM GMT
The Michael Roberts horse was Cezanne - I was at Haydock when he was a beaten favourite in just an ordinary backend Saturday handicap when trained by Stoute in the Sheikh Mo colours.

Was then sent to Ibrahim where he showed sudden, unreal improvement in two races at Nad El Sheba, then reappeared in the UK, finished fourth in a feature handicap at Sandown on the Friday of the Eclipse meeting with  Timeform stating that ' he'd improved dramatically since being sent to race in Dubai ', He won the Magnet Cup on his next start, rejoined Stoute, and won the Irish Champion Stakes two starts later.

After an unsuccessful run in the Breeders Cup he was moved back to Ibrahim then on to Suroor. Was below his best from then on, suffered fertility problems at stud then reappeared over hurdles with Roberts as a nine year old gelding.

Not a pleasing tale but did at least finish his career in one piece at 12 years of age.
