A gambler is fighting Paddy Power, the betting giant, in court for the £1 million she claims she won with a single spin of an online slot machine.
Corrinne Durber, of Gloucestershire, was told she had won the “monster jackpot†of £1,097,132.71 while playing Paddy Power’s Alice in Wonderland-themed online slot game The Wild Hatter during the Covid pandemic in October 2020.
But the account of Mrs Durber, a gardener, was only credited with £20,265.14. When she complained, the gambling company said that an error had led to a mismatch between the “monster jackpot†result that was shown to her by an arrow on her screen and the result determined by the central computer server at Paddy Power’s headquarters.
The bookies went on to show Mrs Durbar a 45-page rulebook of terms and conditions, which they claimed justified their decision not to pay out her £1 million jackpot.
She is suing PPB Entertainment, the company that owns Paddy Power, at London’s High Court, arguing that the refusal to pay out breaks the game’s rules.
Wheel ‘only an entertainment feature’
The court heard that Mrs Durber’s win came on Oct 18 2020. Mark Baldock, her barrister, told Mr Justice Ritchie: “The rules here say what you see is what you get.â€
Philip Hinks, for Paddy Power, insisted that what is shown on the screen to a customer playing online slots is irrelevant “wallpaperâ€, with the only meaningful action being the hidden generation of a random number by the host company’s central computer.
“The wheel is only an entertainment feature,†he added. “It’s a bit more fun. It doesn’t determine anything.â€
The game is based around a five-by-four fruit machine style grid, in which players hope to match winning symbols.
It features an additional bonus “jackpot gameâ€, which can be triggered by matching three jackpot symbols – which is exactly what Mrs Durber did, her barrister told the judge.
He said: “According to the game rules, Mrs Durber then had to ‘spin the jackpot wheel to determine which of the offered jackpot tiers will be won’.
“This is what she did. The jackpot wheel, once spun, showed Mrs Durber that she had won the ‘monster jackpot’, ie £1,097,132.71. However, Mrs Durber’s account with the defendant was only credited with the considerably lesser sum of the ‘daily jackpot’: £20,265.14.
“Despite having played the game according to the game rules, what Mrs Durber had in fact won was the daily jackpot. That was the result by the random number generation as recorded on the records hosted on Paddy Power’s server.â€
The court was told Paddy Power is relying on the terms and conditions of their online games, which state that the customer “fully accepts and agrees that random number generator software will determine all outcomes of the game†and that the bookie “will not be liable†for payouts offered as a result of “systems or communication errorsâ€.
Asking for Paddy Power’s defence to be struck out and summary judgment granted for Mrs Durber, her barrister said that the terms and conditions “were not sufficiently brought to Mrs Durber’s attentionâ€, were “unenforceable†because they clash with Mrs Durber’s rights in relation to online purchases under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and that they also clashed with Paddy Power’s own game rules for the Wild Hatter slot.

The company merged with rival company Betfair in 2016. PPB Entertainment’s official headquarters is now in Malta.

I read this earlier today. Seems an extraordinary condition, if valid. So you are told via the screen that you have won £x then, as a result of the random allocator (which is hidden and cannot be questioned, you receive £x - lots. Rather like the palpable error rule but completely secret. Very odd indeed. They could just change it to less and nobody would know!

This is a big con by PaddyPower. Paddy Power despite informing the player she'd won the jackpot of £1m+ then citing an error on their "part" ie a glitch on their electronic server, and the lady had not won the jackpot afterall. For a legitimate player to win a legitimate game operated and run by PaddyPower, and be told immediately she'd won the jackpot of £1m+ then only paid £20k+ is all too convenient, extremely unsporting and cruel for the lady.
Imagine this has happened in the National Lottery. Only a "crack-cocaine" online betting operator can sink this low to deny a genuine player winning a genuine jackpot will renege, and cite an "error" in the electronic server. What is nice? A coincidental outage (or glitch).a

First question judge should ask is how many times this super duper jackpot has actually been won over what time just to make sure its not a fraud

Why does PaddyPower not insert a clause which says "PaddyPower reserves the right to withhold, alter or not pay the stated winning amount" subject to confirmation of our technical, operational and security departments.

Their Achilles Heel may be 45 pages of rules/conditions for a game in which is just a glorified lottery. If Lord Denning had been still on the Bench he'd have declared those "Unfair Contract Terms" and found against PP in half a day. Sadly, one senses that our judges these days are more concerned with trans rights, the "climate emergency" and illegals immigrants.

Essentially it's true. All the games are, are a random amount generator between £0.00 up to £millions. People pay a quid or whatever, press go, and the generator produces an amount. Usually £0.00 or less than the stake, sometimes higher. Not many people would play that, tedious and boring, no near miss rushes. So every game has different moving 'wallpaper' to engage the player, cause chemical reactions in the brain. This is linked to the random code, generated each time the player presses the generator.
In this example, they have to prove the wallpaper didn't match the code. How many times does that happen? Why was it coincidentally when the moving wallpaper was the massive jackpot?
Even if they can prove it faulted, they have to demonstrate that it's reasonable not to pay out what the wallpaper indicated.

the funny thing with these occurences is 'if' someone genuinely wins the jackpot once in a blue moon, and then there's an apparent glitch, just pay up and reprogram so it doesn't pay again for another 10 years when the mugs have paid enough back in, the mugs will be none the wiser.
Seems to go against the spirit of Irish Power paying out league leader several months in advance of them finishing to welch on this.

Wasn't there a similar case a few years ago where a guy got loads of repeat wins at Fred's for something like a million. The court ruled in his favour.
