Mullins said:- “Both jockeys went out with no instructions, and I was happy to let them do what they wanted, ride their own race.
“They were setting it up to be a hell of a race. It’s disappointing for Rich, the public — it’s disappointing for us all.
“It was just one of those things and Paul was lucky not to be brought down.
“Paul was happier that he was back to himself. He only does whatever he has to do, and only wins a length or two when he’s right.
“Paul never waivers from him. There was never any question (which horse he was going to ride)."
On Lossiemouth he added:- “At Fairyhouse she was running at a four-mile pace and we always settled her in behind because she was so keen.
“She is bred to be way faster than State Man, but she just wasn’t used to that fast pace that they go around Kempton. I didn’t think that was anything to do with zest, it was just to do with the way we’d been teaching her to race.
“I haven’t spoken to Rich but our plan has always been to go for the Champion Hurdle and unless they have a change of heart, I’m happy she can still go for a Champion Hurdle.”
Townend told RTE:- “I was very very lucky not to be brought down. I was on top of him.
“It was going to be a match but positives to take out of it up to that, we were going the gallop no bother today. He felt better in himself today.
“We don’t know what would have happened but I suppose take nothing away from him. He can only do what he does.
“I’ll tell you the truth the last was looking very big, for such a good jumper, when I was coming to it. I had way too much time to think.
“I don’t know what the times are saying, what speeds we were doing compared to Christmas or anything, but he felt better in himself today.
“Hopefully Danny and the mare are okay. Fair play to State Man, you have to jump them and he’s won again.”
One thing is for certain, lossiemouth will be a very sore lady tomorrow, she won't work much for a week and will need a few schooling sessions to get her confidence back. In spite of what WPM said straight after the race, there's as much chance of Gallopin Des Champs lining up for the Champion Hurdle as there is Lossiwmouth. If she makes it to Cheltenham at all then it will be for the Mares. One of the best pieces of punting advice I ever got was from a trainer many years ago who said you should never, ever back a horse next time out after suffering a heavy fall.

Firstimevisor you must be laying lossiemouth for the CH if you're convinced she won't run?
I think Rich Ricci said if she won or ran well in defeat they'd be going for CH and if she got stuffed they'd go for the Mares..I think she was going well enough to suggest she deffo wasn't going to get stuffed.

He felt better because he wasn't being asked to go quicker than he was comfortable with, it's easy assume that they were going at some sort of pace because they went off in front, both these horses suffered races where they had trouble going the gallop last time but here both travelled OK, it's because they were going slower, SM actually ran 18 seconds slower yesterday than he ran at Xmas when he was under an apparent cloud!! even with that I wonder just what Townend was hanging on to.

If times are your thing then that race on Sunday was quick, relative to the ground. They went plenty fast enough and the winner eased down as soon as the mare fell.
Duffy, you seem fixated on the idea that State Man doesn't have pace based on his run at Christmas, that the fast pace somehow found him out.
BDA has already shown that she stays well (thats not to say Stateman doesn't stay) but you also seem to be convinced that she has far more pace than State Man, in which case surely she could just sit in behind him and do him for a turn of foot at any time. Why would she need a crazy gallop and a pacemaker if she has these extra gears that the others don't have?

WPM states the Champion still the target for Lossiemouth which they've had a 2 year plan for and nothing changes unless she's injured, unless Rich (Ricci) thinks different.

Because she is Denman not Kauto
If he can run a 2 miles at a leisurely pace, like pretty much all his grade 1's then he has a turn of foot for the last flight burn up to the line.
If he is forced to run at a stronger pace through-out then the finish is run out of him.
That's not my opinion, that's what's actually happened the two times he's faced a top notcher although against CH he wasn't burned off through-out as that Champion wasn't really hard run he was just outpaced by a horse at the end who was quicker than him, he got a dose of his own medicine so to speak.
