Galopin Des Champs called 'the best in Ireland since Arkle' by Ruby Walsh ahead of Dublin Racing Festival

He is bidding for Irish Gold Cup (3.30) hat-trick and will look to double up at Cheltenham next month

I know a lot of people don't rate Best Mate but he did win the GC 3 times and his second was a procession. I think that GDC would beat him plus Kauto Star and Denman but I would back him to beat any other Gold Cup winner of the last 20 years. Everyone criticised Hen for not running him much but it was his win in the King George that proved to be his hardest race and it broke my heart to see him walk home that day. He was never quite the same again.

I think dis haarse is better than Dessie, Burrough Hill Lad and Denman of course he is.

Dessie carried weight but failed multiple times in the blue riband races the Champion Chase and Gold Cup. He was outclassed off level weights often.

I think he is the best Gold Cup horse since Best Mate in fact he reminds me of him but is a much more solid muscular horse than Matey who cruised better and had immense class. Galopin has also and an engine that keeps going.
Report eric_morris February 2, 2025 7:42 PM GMT
Opposition tends to average out there are rarely a couple of great horses on a year it doent mean the horse in question on his own isnt a great.

It’s not every year you can have a Kauto, Denman or Moscow, Azertyuip, Well Chief year

Report windsor knot February 2, 2025 8:28 PM GMT
saxon ... i would think there is little chance of haydock . why bottom him on awful ground over that trip when his targets are later in the season ? ...i would suggest ludlow . after all , a ludlow winner was 2nd in the irish champion hurdle today !
Report saxon farm February 3, 2025 12:27 AM GMT
windsor knot, I reckon you’re pulling my chain!
Anyway the Haydock race is the only appropriate race going left handed before Christmas unless he turns up at Wetherby in late October (zilch chance) or Newbury late November in the Hennessy (haha)
Tom Dreaper would have probably run him in all 3.
Report sageform February 3, 2025 7:08 AM GMT
It is the trip that matters at least as much as the course. He is only a good horse over 2.5 miles, a very good one over 3 miles and one of the very best we have ever seen over 3.2 miles in March.
Report CLYDEBANK29 February 3, 2025 9:06 AM GMT
better than Dessie!  Dessie won The Racing Post Chase Irish National and Victor Chandler (when it was a hcap) off 12st.  It gave 2 stone and a beating over 2 miles and 3m 4f.
Report sageform February 3, 2025 9:13 AM GMT
I didn't say that. Dessie and Kauto were much more versatile but over 3.25 miles at Cheltenham I think GDP would beat them. His last furlong was as quick as a flat race according to one time expert so how much did he have in hand? Over 3.25 miles I think he could have won 30 lengths and more on Saturday.
Report CLYDEBANK29 February 3, 2025 9:14 AM GMT

I think Galopin is arguably the best Gold Cup winner for a number of years.  It's a funny race.  The race can change completely in the last 2 furlongs and been a fair few very average winners.

I remember Cool Dawn winning most.  In my last employment at a Patent firm, before I took up gambling, it was owned by the best friend of one of the partners.  THey travelled back on the train to London with The Gold Cup.  I think it had the lowest or 2nd lowest handicap mark in the entire field and I don't think it ever won another race.  I remember thinking.  How the fook did that win!

Don't all great horses need to have one of the following attributes:
1, have a great adversary that they beat consistently
2, win good races over a range of trips
3, put in consistent weight carrying performances

GDC hasn't really any of these.

And if we're honest neither had Best Mate.
Report eric_morris February 3, 2025 1:43 PM GMT

no these are not required to be "great horses"?
How else are you going to measure it?

If the horses don't race, and don't get tested, how else are you going to rate them?
Report eric_morris February 3, 2025 6:49 PM GMT
You can be a great horse at one given distance

It doesnt matter if there isnt another great horse the year a great horse is in training. Arkle would have been a great horse even if those others at the time were poor

You dont have to carry weight to be a great horse that is just about a horses conformation. Stronger horses can concede weight than lighter framed horses it has nothing to do with greatness. Greatness is the qualities needed at a given trip and can be a combination of stamina and speed or just speed against contemporaries.
Report eric_morris February 3, 2025 6:57 PM GMT
The Championship races are the acid test not handicaps
Report howard February 4, 2025 11:30 AM GMT
John Randall. "The modern jumps scene would be almost unrecognisable to a time-travelling racegoer from the 1960's who saw the two greatest steeplechasers of all time, stablemates Arkle and Flyingbolt. Some have questioned the validity of the Dreaper pair's sky-high ratings but the reason for them is simple: they were forced to demonstrate the full extent of their greatness by conceding up to three stone (42lbs) in handicaps to rivals who were of normal Gold Cup standard. Modern champions do not run in handicaps, and are therefore not tested to that extent".
Report sageform February 4, 2025 11:46 AM GMT
I can't see what is going to test Galopin des Champs if he retains his form. L'Homme Presse is a decent horse but would not be sighted in most Gold Cups. Willie Mullins had the second and third on Saturday and I don't see either of those being able to test him over 3.25. That leaves Banbridge of the first 10 in the betting who has not previously been beaten by GDC. If he improves for going up to 3.25 he is a viable prospect but as they started him over 2 miles that is a big question. I agree about Arkle. He beat 2 previous Gold Cup winners out of sight. Those of us around at the time thought that Pas Seul was a good horse when he won the GC but he was way behind Arkle and Mill House.
Report sageform February 4, 2025 3:30 PM GMT
I can't see the Denman chase producing a Gold Cup hopeful. Djelo is top rated but surely he won't even stay 3 miles which is why he is also in the Game Spirit!. A shadow of the race it used to be.
Report duffy February 4, 2025 3:57 PM GMT
Banbridge is a very plausible contender, he's passed his first test stepping up in trip with flying colours and the french horse wasn't falling back into his lap, he had to do a bit of donkey work bridging that gap.

He'd be following in the hoofprints of A Plus Tard and Kicking King in having the class over shorter and being able to bring it to the longer distance, just imagine if he improves for the extra distance, won't lack for tenacity, he'd be very dangerous IMO.

He's 6/4 best price for Punchestown next week, and I think he'll win. The ground was against him at Cheltenham; the opposition is inferior too without Fact To File or Inothewayurthinkin. And, 6/4 is a great price. I think he ought to be 4/6, and no more.

Another with a great chance of repenting is Teahupoo. He was greatly inconvenienced by the Cheltenham ground too. I think the easier ground anticipated at Punchestown will play to his strength.

Constitution Hill will need to show up 1st of all. Then he'll need to jump the hurdles cleanly. With these two mega factors to overcome the safer bet would be State Man (7/4) here at the moment. The rest of the Gp1 card is for Mr Mullins's benefit.
