I was there in 2023 on trials day when gambler owned Energumene turned up at 4/9 and ran as though it was just part of his prep for Cheltenham.
Never placed in the race to win but it had his main rival at the time Edwardstone following the wrong horse in the race then trying to catch Editeur Du Gite late on which he failed to make the ground up. Edwardstone was completely legless in the ring after and his Queen Mother chance gone. Owner then wins a fortune at Cheltenham in March. Mind games again?
My prediction is Energumene will be at his best when the money is down no sooner. Very good on keeping it under wraps as last time you wont know until it happens.

No fookin around here six weeks later positive ride made Editeur Du Gite look pedestrian. Which ride turns up this Saturday?

So the prices for tomorrow suggest Energumene may be an 11 yo about to have a go in the race 7 weeks before the big one. Lets see what happens ten minutes before the off interesting.

They could be trying to beat Jonbon now for a psychological advantage come the day however why would they change the winning formula of 2023 when 2 years younger he wasn't put in the race in the Clarence House but it brought him on for the future battle when it mattered? Market near the off will be interesting.

I would have expected Energumene to have been setting out to make it a strong test if today was the day, however it looked like a dawdle for much of the race. I'd be inclined to think that today was just another stepping stone for him , he's 11 now and has one more chance, betting suggested he wasn't going to be rinsed today.

Mullings will have better maybe but he now knows having finished twice to jobon exactly what’s needed, he looked fully fit today jobon and be interesting will he improve for Cheltenham, jobon could be better that mullings lot but they have one target, think it’s all about prices on the day and which one mullings puts up or multiple runners

Energumene was trying today that was fairly obvious imo. He had Banbridge, not great at 2m in touch last time before he fell. He seems to have come on a lot for that run seeing him pushed out fully today. He couldn’t take the lead from Jonbon and would have lost even further if he had imo.

JonBon would have been too good whatever Townend decided, seems to be getting better with age not overly impressive today but like a lot of Hendersons seems to find more towards end of races when push comes to shove

I'm not sure if 2m is the optimum for Il Est Francais. I'm more inclined with Ryanair (2m 4f). But, whichever his adversaries could be just as tough eg Fact To File (Ryanair) or Jonbon (Champion).

The fact remains though for Jonbon is that he still has it to prove on the very big day, could be that Nicky missed his chance last year by taking him out of the CC, could be that there's something of the bridesmaid about him when we look back on it all.
Arguably Cheltenham isn't his favourite track either, he wasn't impressive in the Schloer earlier in the season and before that had that peculiar reversal behind Elixir De Nutz, I think he'll be one that the books will be keen to get come the day.

I think Energumene has had his days. It's always difficult to come back from an injury and still retain all the ability. A classic example is Allaho. Unless it is not to be I think Jonbon will always beat Energumene in a non-handicap race from now on.
