If people are interested in something they will learn what the terms mean , rather than dumbing down something that is steeped in history and tradition.
It's all part of the allure and the mystery of the sport that has traditions from years gone by woven into its rich tapestry.

It's not hard to understand the betting fractions as my 8yr son old watching racing on telly asked me what the numbers meant and I reluctantly told him as i wanted him to focus on the horses and not the betting but he picked it up instantly and now understands 5/4, 7/4, 4/1 and tells me what percentage each horse has.
If an 8yr old can understand it and do the maths in his head then no dumbing down is required .

If people are that thick they can't work it out then best solution is to euthanise them as they are beyond hope.

Congratulations on getting your children back oneten!!! Apart from being FOS btw.

Oneten gone to deliver his son back to his ex or considering his post about his son immediately picking up fractions and percentages? The UK and Ireland the only jurisdictions not being decimal so a bit rich oneten et al labelling it dumbing down.

How long was this platform using fractions? I prefer them tbh but only because old school but fail to understand why tradition should prevail just because it is what us oldies understood, I have to think twice when looking at Imperial weights and measures and been similar for 40+ years.

As for knowing book percentages, oneten is FOS regarding his son picking it up straight away IMVHO?

It is a tight call tbf to decide between you, Impossible, Hulk et al who would be crowned the dullest blade in the knife box and being the most prolific and sad opinion holders who have no clue what they are posting about and seem bitter and twisted because they have been left behind when brain cells were issued.

TBH, not sure why anyone would be that bothered about moving to decimals (or not) - I don't think it really matters either way in terms of industry and it's future. The future of the betting industry has far deeper concerns than the odds formats used.
Report CagliariG January 12, 2025 6:09 PM GMT

Sure Geoff Banks tried it many  many years ago think he packed in after 4 races said  he never took a bet at decimal odds.
Have a nice evening  looking forward to  a lovely  chicken  casserole.

Hope you are well Ronnie, the point is I assume that most youngsters understand the simple principles of Decimal as opposed to traditional odds.

If I said " I will take 7/4 " how many would have a clue on here what I meant never mind the outside world?

Report Regbutler January 12, 2025 6:31 PM GMT
Cag, you think youngsters understand decimal?
Many times I have had a young person operating a till, who just offers you the change that the till has suggested you are due, without realising that they have put in the wrong figures in the first place...
Whereas an older person might say, hang on that doesn't look right
Report CagliariG January 12, 2025 6:41 PM GMT
So 99% + of the world runs on Decimal Reg but the UK and Racing should stay where they are IYO? How many cashiers in bookies do you that will be targeted as future racegoers for the purpose of moving forward?

BTW, I despise Mottysaid, everything about him and his ilk but the OP started this thread admitting he was clueless and formed an opinion of attack and derision without any facts?
Report Ramruma January 12, 2025 6:52 PM GMT
They can change to decimal odds if they like. Betfair already has. Most online bookmakers offer users the choice of how they want prices shown.

I doubt it will make any real difference. It is just another gimmick, like when we changed the way stalls are numbered. Another change that did not meet the promises of its advocates.

But calling ratios fractions does not help. It just adds another thin layer of confusion.

Decimalisation takes a bit of working out plus it's usually less generous than in the past eg 3.2 (16/5) is lesser than 10/3 (next odd after 3/1).

Only if thinking or knowing I am right Quixall and Ranruna is 100% fukced in his head in trying to change a fraction to a ratio!!!

Report CagliariG January 12, 2025 7:23 PM GMT
Ce vediamo caginieri , Ramruna still trying to work out why odd should be expressed as Ratio and not fractional, no difference btw other than no bookmaker I ever knew used the word outside of a boardroom!!!

Screenshots from Skybet, Hills and Bet365 showing that customers can specify the odds format they prefer. I got bored after three but all the books are the same. Lee Mottershead needs to get out more, or rather stay in more and bet online.
