Loach told the kid at the end that he wouldn't be caned to get the most real reaction of shock. He did the same to the Arab women in Riff-Raff when they opened the door on Ricky Tomlinson taking a bath, and to the woman in the loan shark scene in Raining Stones.

Rather than continue that rant it occurs to me there is something very British about Kes, the book or the film, being our best known coming of age tale, a genre more common in America.

The optimism of youth, the flowering of a new generation, not really. Can an ordinary boy escape his destiny to go down the pit? Answer, no. No he can't.

In America, he'd be tall, good-looking, athletic and wise-cracking, and he'd win the All-American hawking championship instead of the bird SPOILER!

Mind you, Billy Elliot just texted me and sayed maybe we have gone American after all.

Brian glover was a fantastic actor, not sure what you're on about. The script was written by Barry hines, one of the finest scriptwriters of that generation.

There is a fantastic play for today on YT from the 70s called The Fishing Party, starring Brian Glover. It's brilliant.

there are some great plays  from the 60s 70s on YouTube well worth a watch , just type in play for today  or armchair theatre etc .

The BBC made great, non pc drama back in the day. Sad to see the state of it today. Still, there is always YT for the great stuff.

Same with ITV, they used to show late night plays back in the 70s and 80s, some very good some very weird!

Very true sparrow. Watch any drama these days, all style no substance . And if they do actually produce anything decent, like peaky blinders, they turn it into **** by the end.
