I read that there is not enough proof that bookmakers are restricting bets, well I have been posting most Saturday's about SKYBET, perhaps these commissins could speak to us actual punters!

you,d be sending the slybet  limo around for them and giving them coffee and bickies Laugh

Before “comrade” sparrow appears, why use traditional bookies when you can get plenty on the exchange!
Report Hayden December 14, 2024 11:47 AM GMT
Judging by Trusty's bets posted on the Andrew thread saxon he could easily have given up this exchange due to Premium Charge , i'd guess he's maybe a winning punter long term so perhaps the issue is who else can he get on with anyway.

1sttp , it's not operationally possible for bookmakers to access every individual bet taken in that staking ballpark and Trusty has a restricted take out on his overall business , to allow those bets today they'd have to delve into his a/c again so that's never going to happen on a Saturday or any other day until the time comes when a team reviews all the accounts.

Good luck today all   Happy

This is from 2023, the things you have to do! Of course it landed, and I got the email to state the traders weren't happy, now the account is completely fried. On the specials market your liability was reset the next day, not sure if it's the same with HR, never tried and won't get the opportunity to do so lol. If I remember correctly, this account went back to the blue square days. But not much reward for loyalty, it appears :(

Am I right in thinking Blue Square became SkyBet? I seem to recall you bet via the red button on the Sky remote back then.
Report Hayden December 22, 2024 7:27 PM GMT
No i seem to remember it was 888Sport , Martin Belsham was the CEO when i consulted for them.
Report Cider December 22, 2024 7:29 PM GMT
SkyBet was quite an unusual one, Wham were such an amazing price last year I tried every single betting account I had, just on the off chance I could bet more than pennies. Up to then, I was down to £1 max liability with Sky, ie unusable, but for some reason the reset my liability to at least make it worthwhile placing bets (without informing me). But to make the winnings worthwhile I had to try and get on every day. I doubt I will be getting the liability uplifted again any time soon.

Following a recent in-depth review by our trading team we regret to inform you that your account requires tighter restrictions in the future.

I can't imagine there was much of an in-depth view, aside from acknowledging they can't beat me on specials. Presumably it's the same message sent to everyone they kill off.

Internet betting exchange Betfair has announced it has acquired “certain assets” from competing online bookmaker Blue Square for £5 million ($7.6m).

In the announcement earlier today, Betfair noted that the acquisition included Blue Square’s customer database, which essentially means that all Blue Square users will now be redirected towards Betfair. The wording of the announcement was particularly interesting, in that it made specific reference to “certain assets”, but it’s difficult to see this as anything other than a full acquisition – brand and all.

“The acquisition is consistent with Betfair’s strategy of focusing on regulated markets and growing its sportsbook and gaming operations alongside the exchange,” said Betfair in its statement.

So, from today, if you try to access your Blue Square profile, you’ll be asked to activate your new account on Betfair.

Interesting, the internet says The Rank Group owned BS until 2013.

The Rnk Group and 888 try to buy WH in 2016, and merge the three companies.

Rank Group and 888 have abandoned a £3bn takeover approach for William Hill that would have created Britain’s largest gaming group.

William Hill has rejected two offers in the past month from its gaming rivals, which on Thursday said they would not further sweeten their bid after the high-street bookmaker complained that the approaches had undervalued its business.

WH market cap is apparently a little over £1B as of today :)
Report Cider December 22, 2024 7:44 PM GMT
The second bid for William Hill, which was worth more than £3bn, was flatly rejected on Monday. Gareth Davis, chairman of William Hill, dismissed the complex offer to merge the three companies as “based on risk, debt and hope”.

Interesting , i've lost with all that stuff since i went solo but came reasonably close to working full time for BSQ , during consultancy period they offered me a job and apartment in Paddington , which is were they were based at that time , declined the offer as i'm a Northener and like my home comforts and didn't fancy commuting from Liverpool Lime Street 2 or 3 days every week.

Different times even then when you compare to the industry today , remember taking one bet of £600k on Federer at 1/20 in Miami i think it was , lost in the middle of the night.

Happy & interesting days   Happy

I knew Paddington pretty well, a good pal of mine lived there so I used to crash there regularly when staying over and partying in London. Wouldn't have fancied living there permanently mind.
Report Hayden December 22, 2024 8:53 PM GMT
Yes the BSQ building was literally 5 min walk from the station , we had a bar in Hoylake as well at the time so uprooting would have been messy and meant us living apart weeks on end , no regrets though.

The reason i mentioned 888Sport was that around the time i consulted for BSQ there were rumours of a takeover but it was apparently a complex deal , BSQ joined the the Rank Organisation which already included 888Sport at that time , around 2008 it must have been because i left the rat race in August 2007 , as the piece below states it was all pretty unclear as to the exact deal although when BSQ staff disappeared rather quickly it was the 888Sport guys who kept the business ticking over as a matter of urgency.

Unanswered Questions

Weirdly, not an awful lot was said by Blue Square regarding the deal or regarding their future. Just a few days later the site was taken offline and you hear very little of them. Another strange point to make is that Blue Square was purchased by Rank Group, which also owns 888Sport. So, why didn’t 888 acquire the player database, instead of letting it go to a rival brand? Questions we are likely never going to get answers to.

Even for the main race of the day £5 e/w max bet at the worst price on the street.

@Hayden I still bet on exchange it is just my preferred bets are 20/1+ and e/w; so the exchange doesn't suit me much for that and I have never paid the premium charge. I am not even a long term winner, I would say I lost money for over 20 years between 1980 and 2000ish. As I got older I got a bit wiser and my betting improved. All the books that took all my losses LADBROKES in particular closed my account when I had a £10 win patent and £10 e/w treble and all three won at 11/2, 15/2 and 16/1.

I now don't have many books left I can back with and have opened some new accounts recently.

But for my remaining antepost bets being active I'd have binned this lot. Their price boost are a marketing gimmick, and a complete waste of time eg their latest is 4/1 for a win double for Constitution Hill and Jonbon - max 250p.
Report Hayden January 27, 2025 7:01 PM GMT
It may look decent on numbers but in real terms measured against an exchange the 5.00 is only marginally better than the mythical 4.86 double that produces , the 2/1 as always is a total red herring extracted from vast over rounds making the price differential look spectacular.

'hulk23', I'd like them to think I'm one of them dipstick. I like to play them at their own game for as long as I'd continue to have the slight edge on each bet; 250p is not worth the bother transferring fund in and out of my account.

At this rate even without the application of AC I'd be gone sooner than I think courtesy of the bookies.

I thought I was treated badly.
I used to wager at least £500 annually (return was usually lesser) with 'sly'. Now, it barely reaches £80 annually ever since I was prohibited from any free spin promotion.

Who is the sole loser? Horseracing. The bookies have fobt to cover punters like myself.  If my fate is replicated many times throughout the industry horseracing UK will be in an incessant decline.

But, the bookies do not give a hoot. The bookies and their cohorts eg bookies paid tv channels presenters and "journos" will carry on regardless.

There must 00's of thousands totally disillusioned with the sport. Many of them no doubt youngsters.  These aren't high rollers , but aren't mugs either. They just can't get a worthwhile bet on at advertised odds.

They want a 10er EW  on a 16/1 shot in a 16 runner handicap on the TV racing and get told they can have £1 ew . After a while they just go and do something else - lost forever to the sport.
Report FOYLESWAR January 28, 2025 2:46 PM GMT
true Johnny but the firms wont give a shyte as long as they have the casinos/ cartoons  and bet builders etc.

Why should they give a hoot ? The BHA should care though  , they are the custodians of the sport.

The Government should care - major UK industry.

They can't hide everything under the "affordability checks" blanket.  They must know more is going on.

( I personally must stake £20,000 a year less than a few years ago - just not worth my while looking for small slices of  value anymore - reduced to pennies by them all)
Report impossible123 January 28, 2025 5:34 PM GMT
I used to turn over probably £10k+ annually despite I'm only a recreational punter; I even used a credit card to manage Don Cossack in the Gold Cup. Now, at best £50 total in antepost bets, and £500 per year at best. As such, the impending Cheltenham is considered a non-relevant event for me. There was more betting activity during Covid; 'sly and billie' prohibiting promotion is the last straw.

If this persists any further I'd go 'grey' or give up totally. Maybe rejuvenate previous visitation to racecourses instead to bet with proper bookies. The online bookies are solely fobt inclined, and fronted by past glorified-jockeys for money.
