Anthony Gatehouse Hide, the younger brother of ‘**** of the North’ jockey Edward
Hide, was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, on May 13, 1939.
He rode professionally between 1954 and 1968, serving his apprenticeship under his
father, William.
He was very much under his brother’s long shadow and found success hard to come
by. His biggest win was on King's Gap in the 1959 Thirsk Gold Cup.
He quit riding in 1968 and became assistant trainer, firstly, to his father, then to Major
Peter Nelson at Lambourn and, lastly, to Bruce Hobbs at Newmarket.
In 1973 he moved to Italy to become private trainer to Razza Dormello-Oligiata, the
stud founded by Federico Tesio. He did well there, his victories including the 1974
Italian 2,000 Guineas with Mannsfeld.
He returned to England in 1977 and began training at Machell Place in Old Station
Road, Newmarket, but met with only limited success. He retired in 1997.
Tony Hide died in December 2024, aged 85.
His son, Philip Hide, rode over the jumps for Josh Gifford prior to becoming clerk of
the course at Fontwell Park.

Jockeypaedia is an amazing site, especially if you are older and remember these brave fellows. Some super stories. I could read it all day. Thanks.

I agree about Jockeypedia.
I remember A Hide though his Thirsk Gold cup win WAS before my time.
As the OP said very much in the shadow of Eddie, who I believe is still alive.
