Article in racing post saying £3bn black hole blamed on out of control gambling commission.

Although it seems good the major forces in the sport have got together, they might want to loom at their own operations individually. I doubt much money was included in the turnover for the recent walk over that was on ITV for instance.

It says that betting turnover has not increased with inflation, again this seems very straight forward... if inflation has increased substantially and wages have not kept up then people will have less expendable income, therefore they will actually bet less, which the trend suggests. This would be unless they are gambling irresponsibly, which obviously the gambling commission ha been tasked with trying to prevent.

It seems the information on the racing post graph was last from April 21 - March 22 illustrating a major gap between expected turnover and actual turnover.

Surely they were not basing the future of the sport on the strength of projected betting turnover during lock down covid, where people literally could not go the pub or shopping etc, but will have been able to place bets online. This period will have massively skewed data and I would definitely not have been using betting patterns during covid lockdowns to base decisions to ensure the success of the sport in the future.

Admittedly the gambling commission will have turned some away from betting on the sport by asking for financial information, though I dare say betting turnover would also have increased in horse racing if some bookies took bets and not restricted people to £2.5 each way for example.

I suppose the main positive is the bodies of racing are actually getting together and realising there are issues with the sport. Hopefully they are also looking at other measures within their own processed they can improve to help the sports future.
