interesting read as usual. We punters expect bookmakers to aim for a balanced book but when a single bet can cost more than all of the others put together you are truly gambling on the result.

Reminds me of the day Alan the Beard had a winning bet of £1,000 to £80 with the Jack Lynn firm (what?! how? Yes, I know, but the fact is they laid it). Anyway, Alan went to collect, and there was his £1,080, all neatly bundled up. Just as he turned and walked away with the readies, he heard the plaintive Devon tones of R Lynn: "Could we have our elastic band back, please?"
The trouble was that I told the story to SP returner John Stubbs, who then went and published it in his Ringlets column in the Life. "Times must be hard at the West Country firm of Jack Lynn" began Stubbs' story. I think the Lynns weren't too chuffed about it, thus kicking off a feud between us that seemed to go on for years. |
