Obviously rare.

Granny B runs tomorrow again her HC hurdle debut over 2 miles.

Was it more common in years gone by?

The only one I can remember who I don't think won at 5f but certainly ran very well was Frankincense,  who ended up winning at 2m5f under Jim Crowley.

Incredible really when you think about the obsession with breeding and getting the pairings right!

What actually was he supposed to be?
Report leif November 26, 2024 10:58 PM GMT
His sire won a decent race over a mile while his dam was a sprinter.
Horse was just a freak by all accounts.
Report swiftynifty November 26, 2024 11:02 PM GMT
Sounds like it, that's a hell of a range.

By the way the Frankincense I was referring to was not the one of Barry Hills Lincoln fame.
Report themightymac November 27, 2024 1:15 AM GMT
Red Rum was actually bred as a hopeful Miler.

His sire Quorum was placed in the 2000 Guineas.

His dam was Mared. Breeder took last 3 letters of his sire and dam and named him Red Rum.

.... not a lot of people know that. Crazy

Can anyone remember a horse called Saratoga Skiddy, I think Lester used to ride him in sprints. He won over hurdles if my memory is correct.

Maoi Chinn Tire

He mainly ran over 5f/6f as a 2yo/3yo for J. S. Moore. In Sept 2010 he moved to J. Candlish, fto she ran him in a listed juvenile hurdle at Wetherby. He cruised round and won easily @ 200-1(bsp 1000-1). I was there that day and followed his career from that day onwards. A fantastic horse who won many more times on the flat, mainly over 1m6f+. Only won once more over hurdles.

Les Arcs won the July Cup after finishing 8th over hurdles at Cartmel.

I got scoffed at on here couple of yrs ago for suggesting p,plenty of sprinters went hurdling back in the day at catt etc, the era of berry/oi oyston etc etc
Report stewarts rise November 27, 2024 10:32 AM GMT
5f sprinters are generally far too headstrong to last out over 2m over hurdles imo.

Denham Green won the 1988 Brocklesby (over 5f obviously) and ran six times over hurdles, winning one.

Sylvan Sabre another Brocklesby winner (1991) and ran 31 times over hurdles, winning five!

Wolf, hard to believe a Brocklesbury winner of today could ever win over 2 miles, cheers
Report swiftynifty November 27, 2024 10:52 AM GMT
It looks like 5f winners who go on to hurdling success are few and far between.

Granny B could have been added to the list but is now a NR!

Yes indeed, and also less likely for such a horse to be sent over hurdles with today’s proliferation of all-weather opportunities that weren’t there before.

Like Les Arcs, Cyrano's Lad went in the other direction. He was beaten less than than a length in the Nunthorpe as an 8yo behind the dead heaters Ya Malak and Coastal Bluff. As a 4yo he ran in 2 bumpers; as a 5yo he ran in 2 novice hurdles, one over 2.5 miles. His sire won the Cork and Orrery, and both his grandsires won the Coventry and Middle Park. He was a big lad, so I guess he looked more like a jumper than a sprinter, and took a while to show what he really was.

I have always thought that trainers are far too conservative in the distances they run horses over, most particularly, I am convinced many good horses over 12f+ could win races over shorter distances (perhaps in a slightly lower grade). The one I can think of in the last decade or so was Hartnell who won a Queens Vase (2m) and a Bahrain Trophy (13f) before being sold to Oz. After running over middle distances he won G1 races over 7f and 1m. Within 2 months he won a G2 over 7f, was placed in 3 G1's over 8f, 9f and 10f before being 3rd in the Melbourne Cup. He would have won LOADS more races over a mile or so were it not for the existence of Winx, whom he saw the backside of many times. Off the top of my head, for example, I would love to see what Ambient Friendly could do over 1m. He never seems to impress as a stayer and is sired by a champion miler. Why not have a crack at the Lockinge? Of course, very few of our jockeys know how to ride a horse aggressively, whilst not going too fast which doesn't help. There are others I am sure.

good ones George, I remember those now, maybe not as uncommon as i thought, although they're going back a fair few years now.
Report GEORGE.B November 27, 2024 4:59 PM GMT
I thought Goldie might have had a few because I recalled him given the likes of Geojimali a try over hurdles but not sure he won with them.

The other possibles that occurred to me would be Aidan O'Brien horses who were bred for further but were classy enough to win over 5f early in their juvenile campaigns, and then might have won later on over jumps when moved on to other yards, but can't think of any off the top of my head.
