It was in the day when bookie shops matched the tote payout,even though your bet wasn’t in the tote pool.
So he targeted potentially big payouts,whilst not diluting the payout. |

He’d target low runner cards that paid out low dividends,say 8 quid placepot,but did it to 100 pound lines.outside of the pool

Placepots were great in those days. Outside the pool stakes ranging from 1p to 1/4 of 1p (if you understaked on purpose and shop didn’t notice). Must have been 4 or 5 in my local shop did it for a living.
Much harder these days but if you apply the same “rules” they showed me you can do well. |

we did the same in small field ppots in shops until only hills were the last one that did not go into the pool. although it wasnt low dividends we wanted. we covered every runner and copped some whoppers
shame it ended it was so good for a time but understandable as it was a barmy bet for them it is still worthwhile now in small fields with n/rs |

The Dagenham Greyhound Coup of 1964 did it's bit to end the bookmakers paying out on tote dividends. One winning ticket there that day paid £987+ although the bookmakers witheld payment.

That dividend was to a 2/- unit.

We covered every runner as well Mitolo. Fav 5 times 2nd Fav 3 times and so on. You just wanted all the fancies out to get a big payday. If they did come in you permed them up so got some decent money back.

sparrer it didnt light em up that much as it took them another 40 years to stop it
we werent that sophisticated hb. we were all too dim and lazy and just saw the runner count and put them all in just before the off. we got up every ppot we did and of course sometimes we lost money but we copped 24k for 200 quid at the abbott once and then we really stepped it up another handy aspect was that it was settled manually then and soemtimes theyd get it wrong. and wed always say so if it went marginally against us. but not if it was worth a few quid |

It soon stopped them paying out tote pool odds on the dogs after Dagenham, mitolo.

im sure it did. dogs always a dodgy business. my old man used to go to white city(anfield) and whn the 'wrong' dog was in front the hare would stop or a teddy bear would be chucked onto the track

I had long left London after Hackney was reopened but still attended the latest version. My time in London was spent mostly at Clapton and Harringay in those days and rarely Hackney.
