made some sensible points about the social benefits that can come from habitual ( non-addictive) betting. Maybe it doesn't apply as much today but it certainly was the case up to about 20 yrs. ago .My grandfather lived for following Piggott with his few shillings evary day and I doubt he ever lost that much -it was the modest price of entertainment.
I had an uncle the same -a daily treble or 'bob up and down' was his chief interest when he retired.Plus the camaraderie to be had in the bookies - gossip , hard luck stories , conspiracy theories , rotten referees , dumb stewards etc. etc.
Seemed like innocent times compared to now where every little problem is dramatised into a full-blown crisis and we're always being told we're only a step away from doom and disaster.

lets be fair bookies have never been the nicest place to be everyone has seen someone losing money theyu cant afford to lose,losing it with the staff .fellow customers etc,pacing around, especially if you used to spend a few hrs in them and after work etc,my local bookies a ladfcrookes had a perspex screen up to protect the staff over 40 yrs ago
While going through some pretty tough periods in my life, I can honestly say that daily form study was often the only thing that kept me sane.

the amount of bollox talked on this subject by those who dont know what they are on about is incredibly irritating. the national press and the beeb are bad enough but some(mostly) labour politicians see it as an evil where giant corporations prey on the poor little mugs who dont know whats good for them. my mp a g1 example. she knows what they need. never had a bet of course
the gambolling commission made things worse. some of the figures theyve fed to the antis that have been discredited are now used against racing. much as bookmakers havent helped they are subject to strcit regulation and pay chunks in tax and if things get much worse they will give up horse racing altogether. its too much grief and doesnt make economic sense a lot of the time

My auld fella has dementia (short-term memory is kaputt) and if he didn't have the daily ritual of going for the paper, studying the form and going to place bets, he wouldn't be around anymore.

funnily enough or not funny I no a young bloke who lost a lot of money,his flat,his family for losing bigt on online bingo about 12 yrs ago when it 1st became popular
I know people who were addicted to poker machines and virtual racing -I always presumed it is the bells and whistles that get people hooked.

A stereotypical, degenerate punter might wear a boiler suit, a three piece suit and every other kind of suit but all had the same trait.
They didn't enjoy having a bet they were just hell bent on doing their stones trying to get that adrenalin hit that elevated them to some point who knows where.
It's an illness and not one of them would want to see the back of gambling adverts or enticements to prolong their misery.

if only it would come up. id like to see theri faces after getting paid 100 quid for a 49 million shot
talking of probabilty. i set a pub quiz for my mate mitolo recently and one of the questions was; what are the odds of tossing a coin 4 times and getting 4 heads. 3 teams out of 10 got it

Mitolo -my Uncle worked with someone who did his numbers twice for every lottery draw because he wasn't sharing with anyone if his numbers came up.There are a lot of lunatics out there.

I worked in betting shops, and was a regular punter in them, in a working class village in the late 1960s and based on that experience they did have a social dimension and I only saw one punter (lovely woman) who, retrospectively, was a little addictive as she spent all racing hours there but her bets were standard amounts so I don't think she did any damage to herself financially speaking (her husband seemed well off).
Maybe it was different in other environments, but I found them a friendly place and never once had a bad encounter with a customer.

It fits in with the liberalist ideology. They love to create a section of society who are too dumb or too stupid to make their own decisions. Therefore they need the State (ie them) to protect the stupid from themselves. Hence the gargantuan welfare state, nearly 10 million adults not working, untrammelled immigration and food bank industry.
the financial 2008 crisis, ponzi schemes,privatized utilities etc were oc course the fault of the clever .bright right wing free market capitalists ,begging THE STATE to bail them out for their mistakes
