As i understand it the current broadcsters of Irish racing RMG say it is not viable for them to continue into 2026 does this mean that Sky sports racing who can broadcast a different feed for Ireland will take over the contract from RMG media.

The viability issue is because gambling advertising isn't allowed, so sky aren't going to chuck all their advertisers to get a few extra races,
Report mrcombustible October 17, 2024 8:25 PM BST
Sky Sports may get the contract when it comes up for renewal but not until then.
Report jamee1 October 17, 2024 8:38 PM BST
I'm guessing no racing channel is going to want to touch them.

DAYTIME betting ads will start to disappear from our TVs and online over the next 12 months as landmark new laws to tackle gambling addiction come into force.

On Wednesday night, the Dail passed the Gambling Regulation Bill through the final stage with the legislation now sent to President Michael D Higgins to sign into action.

The bill has been four years in the making with Fianna Fail’s James Browne facing heavy lobbying and pushback from the gambling and horse racing industries who had concerns about its impact.

The bill bans all gambling advertising on TV and online between 5.30am and 9pm with multi million euro fines and possible prison sentences for the execs of companies that break the ban.

The new law will also clamp down on gambling incentives from bookmakers such as free bets, VIP treatment or free hospitality.

Bookies will also be required to pay into a new social impact fund to help people struggling with addiction.

A ban in 2026 means a lot of horse trading between now and then.

We have an issue in the UK where gambling ads are aired morning, noon and late night.

This new fad of 'safer betting' ads are just superficial.

That bint who robbed the charity has a facebook feed full of Bingo ads.
The Irish postman who was offered VIP trips to racecourses.
The bint who did hundreds of thousands was approached by a bookie's rep who sympathised with the bint's recent family loss and offered her an account top up.

The guy who made efforts to pack it before commiting suicide with his sister saying he could just not avoid adverting promos tempting him back.

Ban all gambling ads and find a model that supports the game even if the game has to be streamlined.
Report dave1357 October 17, 2024 8:47 PM BST
I'd guess that feeds will still be available from bookies sites, but rtv and sky won't broadcast in ireland.
Report mrcombustible October 17, 2024 8:50 PM BST
Sky are doing a separate feed for Ireland so will continue to broadcast racing to Ireland

Racing channel say they can't afford two feeds
Report dave1357 October 17, 2024 9:03 PM BST
interesting - when this ad ban was mooted as a possibility, I thought rtv would find it easier to clip the ads than sky.
Report swiftynifty October 17, 2024 9:07 PM BST
RTV's original model required no advertising. They should've stuck with that. They've got more people on the payroll now than there are horses in training.
Report GEORGE.B October 17, 2024 9:11 PM BST
One presenter on course with a pundit, who also had to cover an away meeting if there was one, with a voiceover person in a booth somewhere, who you didn't see and had to cover everything else.

Three people covering the lot.

Would they argue that more presenters / pundits = more subscribers?
Report swiftynifty October 17, 2024 9:17 PM BST
I'd guess subscriber numbers have declined whilst bookies adverts have multiplied. And picture lag is still poor.
Report GEORGE.B October 17, 2024 9:22 PM BST
I suppose they would argue that putting on a quality production with shows like Mark Your Card and The Friday Club, as opposed to just a very basic package showing just the racing, helps attract and retain more customers?
Report swiftynifty October 17, 2024 9:27 PM BST
GEORGE, I wouldn't know the numbers, I always have it on for the pictures(for back up only due to speeds), but have realised how little I actually listen to. I find more is less.

All these retired jockeys have to go somewhere hence the proliferation of pundits etc...a jobbing jockey like Martin Dwyer seems to be on morning noon and night

Hardly surprising that Sky can afford an extra channel in Ireland. Drop in the ocean for Sky. RTV however has no news or film channels, sky Atlantic etc. so they are run on a relative shoestring. I like RTV but I can see Sky having the lot if this Irish nonsense becomes law.
Report dave1357 October 18, 2024 1:19 PM BST
becomes law

it is law (in ireland)
Report Ramruma October 18, 2024 1:31 PM BST
One good thing might come out of this Irish law.

... if it means Irish pundits stop telling us how everyone in Ireland has a mystical connection to racing and that every child in Ireland wants to be Ruby Walsh.
Report CROPSICK October 18, 2024 1:41 PM BST
The contract between IHRB and RMG to screen the racing is until 2029 if RMG cant fulfil the terms of the contract maybe they will have to pull out and IHRB will have to re-neotiogate with skyracing if they want to keep Irish racing being broadcast in the country, like wise will RTE find it viable to keep showing it on terrestial tv.
How will it all affect future prizemoney levels in Ireland if revenue is affected,is this good news for UK jump racing, lots of ponderables arises out of this beyond my pay grade anyway.
Report GEORGE.B October 18, 2024 1:48 PM BST
Which begs the question, this law has been in the pipeline for 4 years, RTV won the right to show Irish racing again in 2022, so presuming they were aware this law could happen, why did they take Irish racing on again?
Report differentdrum October 18, 2024 2:01 PM BST
Having Ascot and Newbury has made a big difference to the Sky Racing output. If they lose the Irish then Racing TV suddenly look like the poor relations. Pass the begging bowl round for Luck & Co.

It certainly would, if the eg "paddy power novice hurdle" was deemed advertising.
Report MJK October 18, 2024 2:08 PM BST
Probably a stupid question but why are betting shops allowed to advertise but tv not?

spot on swifty...

why they give work to so many people to say SFA is beyond me...

i'd have one person in the booth and that's it...

all the punditry cash could/should go back in to racing (as they are keen to let us know).
Report HappyHibby October 18, 2024 2:25 PM BST
what must RTV's punditry bill be per year ?

£1.5 million ?

i'm sure their racecourses could do with some of that.

Bizarrely, it's not actually certain that you can, as I can't find any firm definition of advertising when I scanned the law for that word.

i wonder how much Betfair gives RTV per year to use their pictures ?

a fair bit i reckon...

in running on it's last legs...

can't see that funding lasting much longer...

lots of pundits looking to Sky Sports Racing for gigs soon imv.

btw what has been missed so far is this law also means that rtv won't broadcast in ireland at all.

Add in the 'experts' in the various bookie studios telling you that the 'special trenle' and the like is great value and everyone should lump on. I've brought this up before but to me seeing as it's all about addictions that's the same as a supermarket telling you that x brand of cigarettes is great value and we should buy them (which of course isn't allowed anymore).imop the bookies shops have got a freebie as far as advertising is concerned in the current climate.

Report HappyHibby October 18, 2024 3:16 PM BST
if RTV spent some of that £1.5 million (or whatever it is) on improving tracks we might well have had a full meeting at Fakenham today...

and not just 1 race.
Report sageform October 18, 2024 3:24 PM BST
It is only law when it comes into effect which seems to be 2026. They could change their mind by then. I would be happy to see Irish racing moved to RTE so that we can stop having to watch it when a Group race in GB is consigned to a corner of the screen. I don't really mind whether Aiden, Donnacha or Joseph O'Brien wins the first at Leopardstown tomorrow.
Report dave1357 October 18, 2024 3:42 PM BST
that's true, but it's passed both houses, so the opportunity for changes seems limited, particularly as they seem to have put a lot in the primary legislation. In the uk we would prob say "regulations to be published" later.
Report mitolo October 18, 2024 4:05 PM BST
cant be moved to rte

there has been 1 clash so far this year. hardly a big problem. the only other place it could go is the garbage channel and anyone advocating that should be crucified upside down
