To answer the question - a reflection of the country as it is now..

I recently started watching from the beginning - Dec. 1960 was the first episode - an interesting time politically as the Portland Spy Ring was about to be exposed - arrests in January when MI5 panicked that they might escape, but with Ena Sharples, Martha Longhurst and Minnie Cauldwell sipping fake Stout in the Rovers - all must have seemed well in the country.

I posted recently on the Kenneth Cope Rip thread about him and Margot Bryant(Minnie Caldwell) opening the then new Perry Barr precinct in Birmingham in 1964, someone posted a link to a film of the opening, and yes all did seem well in the country back then.
It's a very different place now having been demolished and replaced by the One Stop Shopping Centre, and the people are also very different now some 60 years later. I'll look for the link.
