Opened an account recently to get a FREE gift and later notified by my monthly credit report that the company had recently made a credit check. I just don`t get it. It`s not as if one is asking for credit like one could do 20 years ago. Is this the latest intrusion on affordability checks. Sneaky checks behind customers backs lol.

Name them

Probably a clumsy light touch regulation, that they say they’re doing.

Name them, and do not do it in the future. Something for nothing is history these days.

Hard or soft search ?
Report themightymac September 20, 2024 7:09 PM BST
It was a soft check probably to verify one`s identity. Doesn`t exactly worry me but it does seems a little underhand. Must be hidden in terms and conditions agreed when signing up and probably doing this with everybody. Never ever came across this before.

When I noticed a recent credit check on my monthly credit report, it had me baffled because I hadn`t applied or intended to apply for credit from anybody and the name of the company that had made the search had me baffled - LeoVegas Gaming who are ROAR ROAR ROAR!

It was a free gift offered on another website of one of their affiliates if opening an account with one of the many bookies advertised.

.... p.s. I got the gift but was surprised a soft credit check had been made.
Report Cider September 20, 2024 7:17 PM BST
Yep it's grim as absolutely nothing to do with obtaining credit. The only upside is that nobody else can see it.
Report themightymac September 20, 2024 7:22 PM BST
Very true Cider. But I`ve never seen that happen before. It must be an identity check.

.... First time I`ve ever had a credit check made on me to lose a tenner Laugh

And I guarantee it will be the last. I was relieved to lose it, as I was worried I would win a couple of hundred and have to face the Spanish Inquisition to make a withdrawal, lol.

When Betfair decided to float on the stock market ,they called in PWC,after 10 mins they said great buy, float it.

Yet I know a guy who wanted a 10ew treble,they took 17 years to due dilengence,and PwC wouldn’t sign off .

"the company had recently made a credit check. I just don`t get it"

"light touch" affordability checks.  If they see you have CCJs or outstanding bank debts etc, they will immediately restrict your deposit/spend limits.  AIUI.

Sign of the times, soft checks primarily used to screen for pre-approval offers or possibly a background check. Credit scores are not impacted by soft credit checks and as Cider said, soft checks cannot be seen by anybody else. I checked my car insurance on one of the compare sites and agreed for the top offers to be sent to me. All of those insurance companies did soft checks. I assume a soft check costs somebody money even if peanuts.

No such thing as "a free gift" in this world at least.
Report Cider September 21, 2024 9:30 AM BST
The insurance comparison generates a soft check every time the algorithm is ran! So for example if you toggle the optional excess from 50 to nil and run the query again, that's another soft check.
Report Cider September 21, 2024 9:33 AM BST
100% betting companies should not be running credit checks, soft or otherwise. But in of themselves there is no tangible impact.

I got two soft checks last year from Betfair (PP) with reason money-laundering checks. I'm small punter who usually makes a small withdrawal each money and had not made a deposit for many months before. Totally unnecessary.

I use a couple of the credit report companies - often see several checks (soft credit searches) and often not even credit companies doing it. Stuff like having an unsolicited quote from an insurance company sent to me, comes with them doing a credit check on me sometimes!

Seems we are now constantly open to being checked, even if we don't request anything.

What was the free gift? Just so you know, they clean used silicone minges and pass them on as new.
