How many pigeons line up at the start line? Or are they perched on the branches of trees on the track? I wonder if AOB will be present with quotes like..."but for commercial purposes" eg fees charge at stud, how many covers, etc, City Of Troy would be Champion Stakes bound, and not Del Mar.
Report 1st time poster September 19, 2024 8:58 AM BST
itv racing on tomorrow so I presume they,ll be covering it ?
Report impossible123 September 19, 2024 6:09 PM BST
On a serious note why all this fuss about Southwell? City Of Troy is going to America to prove he can run on the dirt to enhance his career at breeding. In doing so he's chosen to bypass The ARC. Is that what a good horse should be doing ie putting breeding potential before proving himself in the ultimate test race The ARC at Longchamp?
Report ashleigh September 20, 2024 12:30 PM BST
NO ITV racing today, gallop being shown on sky racing and attheraces around 3pm, a crowd of 1500 expected at Southwell, Ryan not riding at Newbury, so assume he will be in the saddle.
Report EastLower Gooner September 20, 2024 1:08 PM BST
Previously trialling them on the fibresand proved beneficial.

The only one who didn’t was Declaration of War but he had sluiced up in an actual race on fibresand back in France when he was trained there so no need for a test run.

No idea why he’s still doing it now…he said something about wanting Troy to experience kick back but surely a trip up to Dundalk would’ve sufficed.

Anyways no harm done…makes a boring Friday interesting innit. Get to see one these work video live instead of a heavily edited 20 second glosses up montage on the Coolmore site.

Someone said he didn’t know Southwell had switched and got embarrassed so just going a long with it now but I’m not sure about that.

Anyone betting on it?

For anyone to suggest that AO'B hasnt realised that Southwell has changed surfaces is ludicrous.

I'll not watch it unless it's shown without any prompting. It's only a horse who's going to run on dirt (I presume) in America.

Racing tv being shown on ITVX
Report Hayden September 20, 2024 2:21 PM BST
ITVX will be showing Racing TV coverage on Friday for two and a half hours after the main terrestrial channel’s Goodwood show comes to a close in the first of three trials this summer.

The other two trials are scheduled for 4.30pm-7pm on day one of York’s Ebor festival on Wednesday, August 21 and a program dedicated to all seven races from the Friday of Ayr’s Gold Cup meeting on September 20.

I think he ought to have run in one of the limited handicap or non-handicap.

O'Brien: "That's the best I've seen him with Ryan riding". Wow! That's a message to supporters to pile on City Of Troy at Del Mar; bookies must be rubbing their hands with glee.

What price is he at Del Mar, and which race just out of interest? I've no intention of backing him; I'd back him in The ARC though (for courage) if he goes there.
Report Somerset Sam September 21, 2024 9:10 AM BST
Having seen the footage of the gallop, what did it actually tell us?
Report formoftheace September 21, 2024 9:10 AM BST
Workmanlike material, beat a tree at Epsom …..place lay at Del Mar…….super hyped !

Mind you all this super hype is big cash in the breeding shed….

Report sageform September 21, 2024 11:42 AM BST
So how did you spend yesterday afternoon sparrow? People follow hype and how was Southwell different to those paying a lot to watch the final practice at the F1 this morning? It was not a race, it was a practice session just like what happened at Southwell. People even turn up to watch practice rounds at Golf tournaments. What was different yesterday was the rare opportunity to see a Champion racecourse at all other than when they are at a race meeting. True racing fans turn up in good numbers for trainers open days just to see horses at close quarters in their boxes.
Report formoftheace September 21, 2024 11:42 AM BST
Kept it late so the fodder would spend….
Report Cider September 21, 2024 11:50 AM BST
It was certainly of interest to some. It's obviously the ballydoyle hype machine in overdrive, but they got to see the derby winner up close and going through his paces, how the ballydoyle mob operate (in public). There wouldn't be any money making/punting angles.

So how did you spend yesterday afternoon sparrow?

Strangely enough I was watching and betting on horse racing.
Report sageform September 21, 2024 12:03 PM BST
No cider, it was a PR exercise but at the same time they had certainly been planning it for a while and with American stalls, bells ringing a small crowd no doubt encouraged to make some noise and some token opposition it was the best way they could mimic what will happen at the Breeders Cup. If it wins the Classic it will have been worth it.
sparrow, you were doing the same as me then although it was a very poor day punting wiseSad.
Report Cider September 21, 2024 12:17 PM BST
Opening it up to the public (and in England) was all about generating narrative, looking towards the breeding sheds.
Report sageform September 21, 2024 12:20 PM BST
Good publicity for Southwell too. I doubt if Coolmore was charged much for the exercise.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves September 21, 2024 1:38 PM BST
Has O'Brien ever explained why he goes to Southwell and not Dundalk? Is it the layout of the track at Southwell?

I'd be genuinely interested to know.
Report ged September 21, 2024 3:27 PM BST
I think it's about the depth of surface. I presume he wants a 'kind' surface for his 'dirt' trials to minimise the risk of injury. He wanted the surface harrowed more deeply than normal, and tapeta is more versatile in that respect than polytrack (which Dundalk has).
Report screaming from beneaththewaves September 21, 2024 3:38 PM BST
Thanks, ged. That makes sense.

I've never really understood Tapeta. It used to be simple: fast-ground horses were best on Equitrack or Polytrack, while soft-ground ones needed Fibresand. But Tapeta can go either way, depending on how it's worked.

One of the many reasons I stopped betting on the AW.
