If so the levy generated will be sufficient to finance horseracing in the UK, and also deliver a decent 1st prize for any winning horse owner eg a win per annum to fund the upkeep of the horse for a year, not 3 or more as present.

This is not rocket-science, just pure common sense. Otherwise, walk away bookies to allow new entrants in the industry who are not bet-acceptance shy.

if i had a guaranteed income source from fobts, bingo, slots etc i wouldn't accept any bets.

they might win.
Report impossible123 August 18, 2024 8:25 PM BST
The Racing League, Sunday Series and others are not necessary to promote horseracing in the UK. These events do not encourage horseracing or help to increase Horseracing Levy, only bookies taking bets can only do that.

How will taking more bets help, when the bookmakers pay levy on profits?
Report impossible123 August 18, 2024 8:58 PM BST
Taking more bets equals a larger revenue equals a larger profit (in the long term) using past history as a guide. A larger profit equals a larger levy for horseracing.

Shop took 800 quid for 150 bets today. One of the worst days ever never took a bet over a score  sad to say said it a few times lately  turn the lights  outs .
Ronnie.
One good thing took plenty on the poxy bingo.

I can't say I could ever agree with that, in the times we live in now.

Dealer.
Down in dark and depressed  Darlo the only Corals  shop left would do that most days till the pof came in the shops  highest  staking  punters have sadly  said NO I am not bloody  telling you.
Hope you are well.
Ronnie.

I can't wait to go Ronnie, the lunatics have well and truly taken over. The current system we are using for "punter protection" is so flawed it's laughable.

Is asking for docs down to the discretion of shop managers?

90% of my bets are done in shops and have been for the last 10 years. I have only ever been asked in 1 x Corals and 1 x Laddies. Never been asked in Billies or Freds which are the ones I use most.I bet on average £600-£1000 per week.
Report the dealer August 18, 2024 9:34 PM BST
I expect each company is different but I doubt any are down to managers discretion. You need to reach certain criteria before the process starts. That solely depends if all your business is monitored correctly, which I doubt it will be. Asking for documents is a fair bit down the line for the majority of shop punters
Report ronnie rails August 18, 2024 9:39 PM BST
Dealer I would bet long odds on most  shops do not monitor  the customers correctly.

Interesting link leif
Report leif August 18, 2024 9:49 PM BST
Yep.
It has got a Tote type system written all over it.
Cuts overheads by 50%.
eye retina tech. instant acceptance or refusal of bets based on data linked to banks, medical, prison records.
Could operate it with an entertainment/gambling venue.

Stand alone betting shops will disappear completely along with many of the racecourses IMO, although it may take a decade or so.
Report Regbutler August 18, 2024 9:50 PM BST
My figures would be almost identical to Different Gravy
90% shop bets and averaging about 800 a week

Never been asked for anything and, to my certain knowledge, neither has anyone in my shop

All that I have heard of is staff asking machine customers if they would like to take a break after so many/much deposits over the counter to top up the machine balance . Generally get told "no" in no uncertain terms and that's it.

any shops do b.o.g ?
Report Regbutler August 19, 2024 9:15 PM BST
Baldy shops do 2 meetings all day plus a third from midday

I think some others do, but maybe need a loyalty card or similar

those aren't loyalty cards.  they are trackers.  use them to your advantage too many times, you will be shut down.  non negotiable.

Paddys already use the firm leif mentions for their ssbt. It amazes me that many shop employees don't realise the reason why they are being told to encourage people to use the machines. The big firms know the day is coming for unmanned shops everywhere and it obviously helps if people are already familiar and comfortable with self service.
Report DIFERENT GRAVY 12 August 20, 2024 9:05 AM BST
Hills offer BOG on singles at all meetings if in close proximity to other shops. Never advertised so best to ask.
Report Regbutler August 20, 2024 9:22 AM BST
Laddies also do BOG if you have a membership card, or tracker as hulk says

They take multiples with BOG but maximum benefit capped at 1k
Surprisingly, hidden in the small print
Whereas baldy no limit

I found out the hard way a couple of years ago
Did a small stake acca, came in, the bet at early prices came to 6k,but there was another 8k in bonus because SPs all bigger
If I'd done it in the baldy shop I'd have collected 14k,instead got 7k

Lesson learnt
Report impossible123 August 20, 2024 10:39 AM BST
If the same willingness to accept bets is replicated online the annual Levy will be significantly more than present and last few years. The present predicament is bookies' induced; take bets or leave the horseracing industry altogether. I've little doubt any slack will be taken up and surpassed by new entrants or existent bookies; less = more share of the business = more revenue = more profit = a higher annual Levy for horseracing.

Bookies must not be allowed to use horseracing as a conduit to bolster their already colossal fobt profits annually.
