Makes me wonder what on earth was posted late last night on Politics

This is telling. It means BF sacked or didn't replace the person who knew how to just suspend posting like on chit-chat and they didn't know how to do that with politics. So they did something weird that keeps going "go/shield/privacy?origin" until it times out.
I'm pretty certain that betfair view these forums as a medium for betting discussion and not social media. If they can't do that, they are going to shut down rather than risk getting fined/reprimanded by ofcom. They might shut down anyway if the new regulations mean they have to employ a lot of staff to police the forums.

wasn't really into chit chat myself until lockdown. specials was my port for many years, but unfortunately that genre of betting is now a dead duck aside from a couple of events a year. in the good old days we had sub forums

When Betfair ran the forum, they appointed two forum moderators who regularly posted on chit-chat. Both were high up in the tech department at Hammersmith, namely TheRankingMissP and Minjita. I met up with MissP every now and then as she lived not far from me in Brixton and was great company.
They would often have literally dozens of "reported" comments to wade through but never permanently barred anyone. Towards the end it ended up being extremely toxic from a select few who were relentlessly in spewing their grotesque bile and led to them pulling the plug permanently.
A great shame as it was a source of much hilarity for many years.

The moderation is absolutely not even handed. Even only recently I recalled a thread on here (HR) when I dove into the psychological manipulation of how we are essentially herded into having only one 'permissible/socially acceptable) view. It was on horse racing as it was about how people are being manipulated to consider gambling as a pariah activity. However the chat was interesting and no particular slander or any rule breaking at that point. iirc the trigger for the thread was a vlog that geoff banks was involved in, publicly available. Someone decided just to terminate the whole thread.
