Rain Cap ran unplaced at Catterick today when well backed. I seem to recall seeing a horse with the same name being well backed at Ripon in 1970 and landing a gamble for a Hampshire based trainer who causing quite a stir with his occasional coups. His name was Ken Payne.

Hi Ronnie, yes thanks I'm very well. I'm still to be seen on the northern courses in the summer. I was at Ripon on Mpnday and had a nice 20s Betfair SP winner. Hope all is well with you.

Ken Payne and his anabolic Steroids.  Read the book years ago.

In the early days Payne's gambles were well planned and executed but when he moved to Kingsley House at Middleham he thought he could do it every week resulting in his eventual downfall. Also I don't think the engagement of 'chalk jockey' Tommy Lappin to ride on a regular basis was one of Payne's smarter decisions.
