been to most big racecourses but never to HQ, actually never been norfolk/suffolk area.  Im sure i started a thread on this many years back, but thinking of going to newmarket this summer, not on race day, so few questions, ,    ok they might sound silly to some but ive no clue,     Can i go close or near to Sir Henrys Warren Place or even go inside,    where and what time would i go to park my car and watch some of the horses do their training, i recall years ago in the RPOST , View from the gallops ALBahatri gallops im sure it was called!, and lastly , can i walk and enter the racecourses ? , thx

Elisjohn, if you're in Norfolk then you simply must take in a days racing @ Fakenham. It's an absolute gem of a track and you won't regret it I can assure you.

Make sure you visit the training grounds in the morning there is something magical about seeing huge strings of Racehorses in every direction....And the Museum is also a must obviously.Plain

Don’t go here unless you have a deathwish. It's possibly the roughest pub I have ever been to. It has a reputation for trouble and it's well deserved.

Sounds ok to me

Last time I went to a Newmarket meeting the experience was OK but it took us 8 hours to get from there back to Gloucestershire. Don't go near the M25.

easiest place to see gallops is the bottom of Warren Hill, near the Best Western Hotel. Loads of horse galloping up and down from dawn to 10ish. The Severals is near Majestic Wine/Clock Tower. They trot and canter there. You should go to the National Horseracing Museum just off the High Street.  Nice place to eat there and sit outside if weather ok.

On a Wednesday or Saturday, from 7am to 9am the Limekilns in the best place to be now the grass is open. Head up the Bury road and as the road forks right, take the right turning, a few hundred yards up there is a parking section. The the gallops are privately owned but if you just stand in one of the openings you wont get in too much trouble.

The main gallop watchers, Ned Tervitt, David Milnes and Tony Elves will often be there and if the short weasel asks you anything ignore him, if Tony or Ned say hello, be polite, they'll usually talk to you and may point out a few strings to you.

Failing that head to the Links, opposite the Rowley Mile and you will be able to see the Watered Gallop and the Back Of The Flat gallop, this is where Michael Bell, Roger Varian, John Gosden and Sir Michael Stoute do their serious work.

Just make sure you're not blocking anyone and don't take a professional camera or you'll be asked to leave.

Warren Hill is okay, but you'll only see slow work and nothing to catch the eye.

In the spring, the serious work happens on Racecourse Side and the Limekilns.

The Al Bahathri is very hard to get a good viewpoint at, but that's a 9f all weather gallop which is very stiff and the likes of Haggas and Botti use it frequently for most of their work.

Anything else you want to know, just ask.

good luck elis. Hoping to be there myself Saturday. Sure Domino is correct. My advice was based on the fact that I don't have a car and generally have a hangover first thing in the morning, so Warren Hill is my limit on foot! The Museum is a must though.

you would, but whether you are allowed access I don't know. I did it years ago in the reverse direction. It is a hell of a schlepp. If you are in a car you can get very close to the Rowley on public roads. It may be open b4 racing but don't know.

one of the great delights in life being at Warren Hill on a glorious April or October morning with the sun coming up over the trees to the east. I never tire of it. I am counting down the days to the Craven. Glad you had a lovely time. Today I assume? What a glorious day to choose.
