Just back from holiday, whilst in Italy had problem with toothache. Owner of campsite rang his dentist at 12 noon and got me an appointment for 3.30pm that afternoon. A quick x-ray and 1hr 20 mins later stage 1 of a root canal job done. Dentist apologized for charging me 100 euros, I assured her it was a bargain ! Another Brexit bonus !

My NHS dentist had to go into partnership with university so I had a trainee pulling my tooth out and the price was upped to a sort of halfway house between NHS and Private...£200.

Utterly impossible to get appt with NH dentist, they now went private, £16 a month, still can't get appt and as for hygenist, next appt Oct (booked in Apr!) and they leave and new one may or may not turn up about every 3 months. With hygenist have been cancelled on day about 4 times. Now always see one on holiday. Turkey the cheapest but wherever always seen same day and so cheap.

Mrs S and I pay around £70 a month for the priveledge of being able to make an appointment when we need one. For that you get clean and polish (which never seems to make any difference), and two check ups a year, when you both of us are inevitably told there is work needed. She's spend £4.5 k already this year, (on fixing a genuine problem), I needed two rebuilds because "the old fillings are collapsing" - had one done for £1100. Refused to have the other, just cried enough is enough - it's not bothering me at all and I'll take my chances. Meantime there is absolutely no chance of finding any viable alternative. Over the years it's been a money pit.

It's all a big con Ten or twenty years ago you paid max 50 quid or so for anything in group 1 dentistry That included however many fillings, extractions Little bit more for root canal work, crowns etc The dentists got paid the difference from NHS They then decided they wanted more, ditched their NHS patients and wanted everyone to go private The government should not have allowed it Dentists, many from overseas trained here, should have been made to serve so many years as a UK dentist or repay thousands of pounds in university fees

And, more ranting I have a customer who owns a dental practice in Hereford They have 4 or 5 dentists who work for them who are paid 150k a year by them, but they earn them double that, less the dental assistant costs plus exes The dentists are all from Poland, trained here It's a licence to print money
Rant over

Was talking to an almost retired dentist last week. He said that there is a huge difference to what they have to do now in terms of examinations, notes and explaining treatment options than when he started. So that extra time cuts into treatment time where they make money. So private cosmetic/remedial work is far more attractive.
I managed to get a new dentist earliier this year. Not long out of uni, he does take time and care over treatment. I wonder how long he'll stay in the nhs.

Must be lucky up here, can usually get an appointment same day if an emergency. Get a fixed appointment date every six months and treatment, if advised within three weeks. NHS practice too.
