When I used to manage online services for an IT company we  used to feel we had failed miserably if our customers told us that WE had an issue, before we had put out a broadcast and informed them. Regrettably BF customer services appear to sit in their Ivory Towers and there are so many issues with their system at the mo, such as

BF going down frequently...LV going down....slow responses on their exchange ( whereby on Horse Racing it takes a few seconds for a bet to get accepted or rejected) ...its a bit like placing a footy bet when (for obvious reasons) from the time you press the button to placing a bet (or lay) there is a few seconds delay...must be costing them a lot of turnover

Report HappyHibby August 30, 2024 11:46 AM BST
Packet loss occurs when one or more packets of data traveling across a computer network fail to reach their destination1. This can result in incomplete data transmission, causing issues like slow network performance, interrupted streams, and lag during online activities2.

Causes of packet loss include:

Network congestion: Too much data traffic can overwhelm the network.
Faulty hardware: Damaged cables, outdated routers, or corrupt network card drivers.
Wireless interference: Obstacles or other wireless devices can disrupt signals.
Software issues: Bugs or misconfigurations in network software32.
To fix packet loss, you can:

Check and replace any faulty hardware.
Reduce network congestion by limiting the number of devices connected.
Update your network drivers and firmware.
Use wired connections instead of wireless where possible

Point taken - I've worked in tech all my adult life.

I think one of the issues with LV is BF don't really provide it - they provide a link which is a pass-through to the LV provider.  And that LV provider will distribute their video via one of the CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) like Akamai.  So it's entirely possible for LV to look perfect in BF Towers, but dreadful to you and me as we connect to different nodes on the CDN.

Disclaimer - digital video is not my area of expertise.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

that's exactly what does happen longbridge...

sounds to me like what 'the provider' sends out is fine until it gets to the local exchange and depending on the local exchange (how modern is it ?) depends if you will have issues or not...

some local exchanges will be more hi-tech/modern than others for sure...

from the local exchange itgoes to the green cabinet (and again some will be more modern than others)...

and from the green cabinet it goes to individual homes...

so there are lots of connections and no doubt some of the kit used needs upgrading big time...

i had a look at where the UK is in the table of 'internet speed' and it is nowhere to be seen worldwide...

we've got a hell of a lot of catching up to do...

hopefully the new government will push the providers to pull their fingers out a bit faster...

i'm sure Boris Johnson made some vague promise to speed up/upgrade the UK's internet...

it wasn't going to happen overnight i suppose but it's a bit embarrassing where we are in the world tbh.

Physical broadband days are numbered. I should think it will be >90% wireless within the next decade. I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to invest in the broadband infrastructure, although I remember Corbyn promising a free fibre rollout for everyone, so you never know.

How do you see that? Virgin (et al) are delivering TV, phone as well as internet over their physical connections - do you see those going wireless?

Business is all wired connections (I don't mean from your laptop in the office to the office network, I mean externally).

I cannot see the backbone of this - or any country's - internet connectivity not being cabled any time soon.

It's just my opinion. I already get a consistent >100Mbps on my phone using 5g, which is more than enough for TV and internet. And then 6g will be with us in 5 years offering significantly greater bandwidth and speed.

Why would any data provider want to pay to maintain a physical infrastructure when it can all be done wirelessly?
