The queen of Team GB's dressage team who was sensationally banned from the sport just days before the Paris Olympics is accused of whipping a horse on its legs more than 24 times, it has been revealed tonight.

Six-time Olympic medalist Charlotte Dujardin was hoping to become Britain's most decorated Olympian but was forced to pull out of the games today, just three days before Friday's Opening Ceremony.

It came after the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) was sent video footage yesterday allegedly showing Dujardin mistreating a horse at a UK training venue. Dujardin, 39, has now been suspended for six months by the sporting body.

According to Dutch lawyer Stephan Wensing, who raised the grievance on behalf of his client, the animal in question was whipped 'like an elephant in a circus', hitting the horse two dozen times in 'one minute and really hard, really harsh, really tough'.

The complainant's identity has until this evening been kept anonymous, however, Mr Wensing tonight said his client was a sponsor of a young rider, a 19-year-old girl, who had attended a lesson with Dujardin two and a half years ago.

The whistleblower had filmed the lesson but had been warned against making an official complaint due to Dujardin's previously sparkling reputation.

'In the video she takes the long whip and beats the horse more than 24 times; (this is) the biggest star in dressage,' Mr Wensing said. 'This is a black day for dressage as well as Charlotte Dujardin.

'But in their statement my client says that if dressage is to survive, they must stop doing this to horses.'

Not a good watch but its still ok to thrash a horse with a whip in a Race?....Sumthin dont add up here.

You watch horse racing every day of the week and pretty much every single horse gets whipped in every race.  YOU watch it and bet on it with no problem.

What a bunch of hypocrites some of you are.

If you are that bothered by it , have some back bone and stick up for what you believe in.  Give up horse racing as a hobby, join the tree huggers and Ill see you on the telly at next years National trying to superglue yourself to Bechers.

Sorry if that sounds rude but reading your comment how you "Felt sick hearing Kauto had found a second career and it makes you wonder how he really died.."  makes you sound like one of these animal rights activists who want to ban everything.

Horses enjoy doing these things, if they didnt like it and want to do it, there is very little a 12stone human could do to make a 500KG horse  do anything it didnt want to.     

Horses when they retire fall into 2 categories.
Those that are nice with kind temperments and those that are pure blood horses - like a 5F sprinter and cannot be rehomed.  So the nut job sprinters are either pensioned off and live out their days as a pet / companion with others in a field or, if they weren't an owners favourite winning machine then they are taken to the slaughter house and  shot and go into dog tins.
 
The ones which have a nice temperament and are suitable for re training are lucky, because its a bit like humans, if some of us sat down the pub all day every day some would love it and others would get bored.  Its the same with retired horses, some standing in a field all day long love it and some hate it.  The ones that hate it need to be active and doing something, hence needing to be retrained and then they have a new lease of life. 

So Kauto was a lucky one.  Sure , he deserved to be king of all pets in a field , eating his way through fields of grass, but a lot of clever horses , as he appeared to be, need more stimulation, so going and doing dressage would have been a very safe and nice gentle sport for him to do. 

For most of us , dressage is all about training them to be supple and using your leg on them, not needing to do what Dujardin was doing.

BUT, if I ve had a nappy one or one that got mulish and stopped and refused to go over a fence, how would you suggest anyone riding a horse go about it ? 
Get off and offer it a carrot ? Talk to it nicely and try to reason with it ?  It wont work.
Its half a ton of horse flesh and a lot stronger than any of us.

The only way is to give it a couple of smacks round its backside with a stick otherwise you are not going to win the battle.  And dont worry, their backsides are well protected.  And because the skin is unmarked, it doest hurt them.  The noise etc stimulates them and as they want to please us because a horse / owner relationship is a two way street it helps make their mind up . 
( I have a racing whip here and my kids use it on me / on each other when they are practicing racing on Sprinter Sacre or Frankel and it doesnt hurt one bit.)


Most horse owners / jockeys love their horses, and their horse love them back in return, which is why they try their best for us most of time.  When you watched Champions the other night and Bryony was on about how Frodon looked after her and now it is her turn to give back to him, that is exactly how it is.  Horses are our friends and we love them. Just because we give them 3 or 4 smacks with a whip doesnt mean we dont love them , but sometimes it is the only way of winning an argument, if doing it by kindness hasn't worked.

 
Its all about training them correctly.
