He may have bored us with his tactics but he’s been pretty successful. Two Euro finals and a World Cup semi isn’t to be sniffed at.

pretty successful

he's had the best players at his disposal, won nothing.  bit like giving lewis hamilton the fastest car, wins nothing all season but gets out and says i came 3rd a couple of times so pretty successful.  ummm, no.

All England managers have had the best players at their disposal! We are perennial losers on the big stage. We’ve had better teams than this in the last thirty years and have accomplished nothing. How many of the current squad are gonna be talked about as ‘greats’ of the game in thirty years time? Not many imo.

Not a fan, but good luck to him. It's long odds on that whoever takes over won't 'fail' as well as Southgate did.

We have the same problem over and over again, a bunch of overrated players not being good enough. Supporters never want to criticise the players because they will be back idolising them in a few weeks time.

Manager always the scapegoat.

He has never won anything and lacks that extra hardness to make crucial decisions, we were never going to win anything but greet his a ok guy just not a winner

Done a good job, certainly compared to many that came before him,  but time to go. Felt he was a bit obstinate in keeping to tactics that didn't bring out the best of his players and in not dropping Harry Kane who although a proven class player was definitely nowhere near his best in Euros.

Should be a great inheritance for someone.

On form and with the formers pace Watkins and Palmer should have started the final. They got us there.  As Gary Neville said if you are going to play counter attack football you need pace up front.  Kane and Foden had poor tournaments. The the likes of Eze and Toney should have had more minutes.

I felt for him though , he seems like a lot of managers, allowed FEAR of losing to overcome logic....

Best news for genuine England supporters. The repeated failures at major competitions despite having the best team and some very talented young players is disappointing.

Au revoir Monsieur Southgate!

It will have to be a foreigner by the look of things. If Howe is our best god help us. Highly likely Southgate all over again.

Good, glad he has gone.

Let’s hope the next manager has a bit more than just telling the players to “believe in themselves”, and then giving them a little cuddle on the pitch after they have once again been beaten.

I fear it’s too late though, that was a golden opportunity to win a trophy, and he wasted it. The other teams will catch up again, and it is hard to believe anybody will ever enjoy as much luck as he has done in these last few tournaments.

Good riddance imo.

'acey', he would have been sacked or pilloried publicly on social media similar to this platform; losing to Iceland is 10x worse than losing to Poland. Mr Southgate is not the man for the present England team of talented young men.

I'd have Ms Wiegman over Mr Southgate because she's technically astute, positive thinking, proactive and not defensive in decision making; Ms Wiegman wants to win each time her girls get on the pitch.

He's also incredibly boring for a football manager. He's too PC, and not a man's man. Also, technically inept for International football.

Had to go, should have stepped down after World Cup, managed as he played, negatively and sideways. The fact that he got us to 2 Euro finals masks the fact that we were totally boring. He made far too many mistakes and stuck by out of form players like Kane, Rice, Foden for too long. Huge mistake not taking Grealish, not taking a proper Left back and playing Bellingham out of position. Sorry Gareth you might well be a decent bloke but not up to this standard.

you needed to have black death not be playing if one of southgates starting 11/12, so for all the time gallagher, wharton, tonewy gomez, etc got on pitch southgate could have took rashford, maddison, grealish and threw them on at some point

Klopp is the obvious candidate. Not too many if they want a 'name'. Should at least give it a try. The US couldn't get him, and you would think they could offer a bigger financial incentive. The position wouldn't have the week to week pressure associated with managing a league club. I suppose there is also the problem of upsetting Liverpool fans to contend with as well.
