Sir Philip Davies is said to have wagered he will not hold his Shipley constituency, where he is defending a 6,242 majority.

There is no suggestion the leading Tory, married to cabinet minister Esther McVey, has broken the law.

But he did not dispute the sum involved - instead declaring it was “nobody’s business”.

Last night he said he “fully expected to lose” the West Yorkshire marginal but insisted he had not done anything illegal.

Six police officers are under investigation on bets placed on an early election, as well as a slew of election candidates and party hands.

The gambling watchdog has been probing dozens of bets made by senior Tories on the early date of the July elections amid allegations of insider trading.

And on Tuesday a Labour candidate Kevin Craig was suspended from the party for punting against himself to win.

But now The Sun understands the Metropolitan Police are to take over the probe amid its widening scale and complexity.

Esther McVey the one-time BBC presenter? Did they not cause a stir with expenses when claiming for two dwellings despite sharing one in London, etc? I guess her partner is hedging; a wager of £8k for a probable smaller return (if losing his seat) or another 5 years (possibly £1m) on the MP gravy train.

£83k is only the starting salary. The majority gets a huge expense account sometimes as much as 2x or more their annual salary. Also, they rarely buy their own food on constituency business eg the locals will feed them.

They aren't banned by the GC, just the FA. The bookie knew who Davies was and happily accepted the bet. He has indeed not broken any rules.

When I worked for Corals and we were warned not to take big bets on certain horses because head office had information on them ,the first thing we did was go to a rival bookie and back them . Was this wrong or would every one have done the same .And by the way they did not all win ,but we all want inside information .

This scandal started with a £100 bet, continued with one bloke touring betting shops to place £100 bets on the date, and now we are up to an £8,000 bet. Any advances? Let's see what tomorrow brings.

With a >200 seat majority labour are going to finish gambling now.
They are planning a return of the blasphemy law and will now have the ear of the same sanctimonious type on stuff like this.
Davies has **** the bed if this is true.

The acts of investing are all about placing counter wagers against a vested interest, as are insurance plans.
But does anyone think labour are going to see it that way now?
Report Ramruma June 27, 2024 7:20 AM BST
I'm not sure where you get this scaremongering about Labour. Most likely the GC will recommend parties themselves ban elected members from betting on politics, in line with various sports.

Scaremongering about labour?

Labour are in hoc to the foreign 1 policy block vote, and now handed what looks to be a vice carried out almost exclusively by tories.

For all the ills of the tories recently, and they have been many, one thing they have got absolutely correct is the disingenuous nature of labour.
Because the only thing we do know that they will do with certainty is appease Islam.

The Economist isn’t in the habit of calling people liars, even politicians, but it poured shade on the claims labour weren’t planning tax rises and listed what would likely be their intention.

We are about to see the decimation of the tory party, a hammering not seen in 100 years, and quite likely the biggest majority seen in most of our lifetimes…and probably opposition of the fkn lib dimmy dems.

The main illegal arrivals on dinghies are from Iran, Afghanistan and Syria. And, Sir Starmer will want or seek to negotiate with the ayatollahs of Iran, the talibans of Afghanistan and King Assad of Syria.

I wonder if he'd bet on a satisfactory outcome with these 3 entities for a repatriation of the illegal dingy refugees.
Report Cider June 27, 2024 10:35 AM BST
It's quite the ingenuity for a persecuted, penniless chap to make the 3500 mile trip from Afghanistan to normandy.

You can see why the Tories are on the way out if the answer to every single question is IMMIGRANTS!
Report dustybin June 27, 2024 10:59 AM BST
The book still hasn’t been sufficiently closed on the premise of betting being too much a temptation to feckless Timmy who can’t control his own actions before the last parliament dissolved.

Now we have the added narrative it’s the temptation of the apparently corrupt tories.

All the more reason for it to become a priority agenda of further limiting of options to go hand in glove with the restriction of speech while empowering the only defended areas of group identity.

It’s more than simply blaming immigrants, it’s about finding excuses to impose a moralistic code imo.
Report dustybin June 27, 2024 11:02 AM BST
Labour arn’t winning this election, how can they be, they arn’t providing anything.
This is an implosion, one brought about by a treacherous tory party who just delivered the leftist political outlook in a generation without having had the authority to.

It's who you know 'duffy', and good pr; the bookie has an ulterior motive. It's the latter, only a negative one. anyway, I think the bet will be annulled, and stake or profit returned or a guest at His Majesty's Prison.
Report Brian June 27, 2024 3:22 PM BST
It's probably silly to back against yourself to become a MP but nothing else. The MP gig will pay many many times more than any bet, those that have probably done it for a bit of emotional or financial hedge and to have a good story to tell later.

The two caught up in it are just collateral damage from the "insider" bets which clearly is wrong (though not a hanging offence) in the circumstances.

John Magnier had £10,000 each way on Secreto at16/1 to beat El Gran Senor in the Derby. An El Gran Senor win would have meant the horse being valued at $40 million.Ladbrokes closed his account after this bet.

I'd say Davies would gladly lose the £8K.

During the recent European elections there were loads of subtle references to gambling during the RTE coverage. The best known political analyst in Ireland is Ivan Yates who once owned 100 betting shops.

This whole scandal is a nonsense.
