Did many London cabbies fly Palestinian flags? The stereotype of the Black Cab driver is a middle-aged Jewish chap. You might be thinking of Ubers.

And yes, any flags on any cars are potentially distracting. Their only saving grace is they might clobber a cyclist on a close overtake.

Give it a few years & they'll have to wear pyjamas & have a tea towel around their heads otherwise they won't pass the Knowledge exam. Also the Sharia way of driving will be part of the test along the lines of not swerving if there's a possibility of running over a member of the LGBT+ community.

It is decisions like that which make make modern politics nauseating.

Afraid to be proud of your own country without upsetting someone.

Has the Mayor of Glasgow done likewise?

Bet your life he would not dare.

The irony is that support for the England team is truly multicultural (that's football, not cricket).

I remember ages ago the high street bookie shops were decorated with the flags of participating nations; Scotland missed out as they did not qualify. It was to mark the tournament and inject a bit of interest to attract the neutrals.

It's sad cabbies are not allowed to have the England flag on their vehicles. This is England , why not? Ironically I've seen a south Asian flag in cars of drivers when I cross the roads esp during a cricket tournament; some just to remind them of their country of origin perhaps.

Black cabs are a domain of the white and black drivers. Others cannot hack the knowledge hence their prevalence in minicabs and Ubers; the lesser the learning, and immediate gratifications the better. And, the sat nav has been their saviour.

Now all they need is a device to translate their mother tongue into  English that can be understood by the majority of their clients/customers.

The Knowledge is possibly the most difficult exam to pass in the world. I've seen several documentaries about it. It can take years of study & some never pass after over 10 years. Hard enough when you can speak English. I'm one of my the very few of my friends & acquaintances who won't use Uber, but do use local minicabs when necessary. When in the centre of London, which is very rare these days, I don't hesitate to use black cabs. But the drivers tell me the industry is gone.

New York is the same. The foreign drivers do not know where they are going or able to recognise the landmark. They can only drive using sat nav. Also, their driving is poor, and the majority speak broken English.

The London Black cab market is gone indeed; the proliferation of Ubers and their likes have seen to that. I'd not use Uber at all; local minicabs yes if stuck.

Why do you think countries like Uganda and Kenya kicked out the non-locals? Now, Fiji is experiencing the same predicament. The country has experienced racial tensions, coups and political turmoils. The minority (Indo-Fijians) is holding the majority of the wealth, economic and political power.

Same everywhere. I have only been to Dublin once in 40 years and when I did the Taxi driver (from a proper rank) barely spoke English (or Gaelic) and took me to the wrong hotel. When we turned up there I had to get directions from the receptionist myself and draw a diagram for the driver! Third world country would be a compliment. And my Ryanair flight from Bristol was 90 minutes late on a flight that should take an hour! The flight attendant was another migrant who could not work out how to use the loudspeaker system!

how did you know he didnt speak irish? did you try your restaurant irish on him?

been to dublin many times and cab drivers uniformly excellent. maybe i just got lucky. repeatedly

one thing is true is that british people have fallen out of love with work, and this is anecdotal so not reliable but the real mitolo employs about 120 people in london and only 30 of them are natives. crazy stuff when you think about it. and if you dont

Flying flags is a working class thing. Wanting to belong. Most houses flying flags are occupied by council tenants or people who were reared on a council estate.

Johnson,Truss and Sunak will wrap themselves in giant union jacks when they want the simpleton vote.

You can be sure that none of the above three would fly a union jack from their car nor house.

mitolo, I didn't say every Dublin taxi driver would have been so clueless but they are supposed to have at least a minimum amount of knowledge. No I don't speak Gaelic but as he sounded eastern European, I doubt if he did either. I don't doubt that London is going the same way. There used to be a strict exam for London cabbies but I doubt if there is now. I can only speak as I found. The cab rank was across the road from the bus stop from the airport so it was not outside of the normal tourist area.

I started learning the Knowledge some years back.

Learnt all 320 runs in the Bluebook.

Took me six months, doing it everyday.

Absolutely loved it, but then lockdown came and f*cked everything up... .Plain

Lucky these days to find 10% of the Dublin city centre cabbies Irish. And that lessens again at night. And without Google maps half of them wouldn't have a clue where they're going.

The deregulation of taxi drivers in Ireland took place on 2000. Many in their 30s and 40s became taxi drivers overnight. Go on 24 years that group would be around retirement age plus covid ended the careers for a fair few. They either retired or got other work. They've been replaced in the main by immigrants, being a taxi is an easier job to get if you are new to a country and struggle to get work elsewhere, even more so with little to no qualifications or even a great command of the local language. Exactly as we've seen across the UK. I think it is about 20-30% Irish, from my own experience, but that number is going down every year.

No-one speaks Gaelic in Ireland, and if they did they'd call the language Irish. The only exceptions are schoolchildren in Irish lessons and a small handful of official terms like Garda (police) and Taoiseach (prime minister). It is not like Welsh or Scots Gaelic where there are geographical communities of native speakers, or like Hebrew where Israel adopted that language for daily use.

In London the percentage is much higher. I've yet to see a white minicab driver. In places like Mitcham, Morden, Thornton Heath, Croydon, Sutton, Cheam and any nearby places it could be as high as 95%. There is little to no monitoring of minicab drivers; the licence obtained will be shared within the family and friends to pay for expenses eg cost of the car/insurance/permit/running costs/etc. And, it's cash in hand - no card with minicabs.

Most are heavily reliant on sat nav for direction even in the local areas. Some of the drivers are clearly neither safe nor competent and unlikely to have passed a driving test; imposters could be arranged for tests for a fee.

Uber is a farce too; dodgy car; dodgy driver; no display of correct insurance; shared id card and car. I'd not take an Uber at all; Black cab or a local minicab from a know local firm.

Slicer....the " enclave " you refer to has existed in Bradford for round about the last 25 to 30 years . If you take any route out of Bradford city centre for 4 or 5 miles the surrounding areas are 95 % populated by the Asian Community. Now i have no feelings as if that is a good or bad thing . I was born in Bradford so have seen this progress over many years , although i moved away a longtime ago.

my daughters primary school has removed the cross and mention of it being a Catholic school due to safeguarding issues. The kids have to walk through Stafford town centre now and then so wouldn't want to upset the new imported settlers that line the streets all day.

Mr Sludge- I fully understand the point you're making. I attended a football match in Luton when the team was in the Conference, now known as the National League. When I turned into Kenilworth Road I thought I should have brought my passport with me. That was at least 10 years ago. The UK has sleep walked into this situation. I truly believe both Tory & Labour Governments have vested interests, unknown to most of us, to allow this to happen. The obvious solution is Navy in the channel, stop ALL immigration until proper control is restored. But they won't do it and I can tell you the battle is already lost. Brits are too placid & tolerant for there to be any form of uprising. Indeed, it it the "opposition" who are well mobilised & prepared to march through the streets in tens of thousands! On a final note, I have many friends who have emigrated to isolated areas of Europe & USA & have started to form their own little communities away from the highly populated areas. eg: The USA has 4 x the UK's population, but is 40 x larger & France is twice the size of the UK with the same size population!

Multicuralism is a great idea if it works in practice. However, there is a distinct group of immigrants ie South Asians who have tended not to embrace or practise multiculturalism. This group chooses to live within their own clusters and not integrate; only speak their mother-tongue dialect/language; will not accept, respect or value our traditions; even tried to affect the established curriculum of our schools; exercise dominance over others including the locals. But, no other groups of immigrants exercise these practices or behave in this manner.

This group of immigrants does not believe in making sacrifices living in a multicultural society. As such, multiculturalism is impossible with them. As a result, there are towns (ghettos) dominated by this group of immigrants esp prevalent in the north of England.

This is a sad scenario. If this is not addressed soon England or the UK will be divided or segregated like some nations in the Middle East and parts of Africa with fractious distinct groups ruling different parts of the same country.
