I'm using Racing Post standard times here. Taking Royal Scotsman's front-running victory as the key race on the card, and assuming Royal Scotsman ran to its mark of 111, that gives City of Troy a figure of 109, plus 16 weight for age, equals 125.

Like its speed figures as a 2yo, that's very, very good. Top class, in fact. But not one of the greatest ever. Not a staggering, Constitution Hill-style speed figure.

wouldn't the penultimate race over the same distance be a better one to derive a mark?

it woithout a doubt ran to at least 125...or the rest are selling platers.

Sorry Rico, not sure where you are getting your wind direction info from, but I have just got back from sitting/standing in the place and the one thing it was not, was a tail wind blowing up the straight (which is what I take you to mean). It was a cross wind, from stand to hill slightly against horses each day

I believe it was a bad derby won by a bang average hoss.
Time will tell out obvs. - if it doesn't race aMischiefgain it will be a legend

compared to the older horses over the same distance, it would be about 128.

Yes, dave. It's just that the winner of the 5.15 is very unexposed, and probably improved a few pounds to win that, which would give City Of Troy an even higher speed figure.

I chose Royal Scotsman's race, because the latter is an exposed horse, and we're pretty sure what its best possible mark is.

I always like to find ways to get the speed figures for a meeting as low as possible. That way, when you do find an outstanding number, you can believe it. That was what made Constitution Hill's Supreme Novices win so exciting. I rated the race through the sixth in the Mares' Hurdle, because I was trying to get the number down to something plausible, and it was still the highest speed figure I've ever seen for a hurdler.

(I'm not looking for an argument here, by the way; it's great to be able to discuss speed ratings with someone.)
