Seems like a desperate attempt to appeal to older voters who are already their core voters Looks like an own goal, imo |

I went to sign up for the navy at the time of the Falklands when I was 17. They said they would call me if they needed "cannon fodder"!! ![]() |

For the vast majority it sounds more like community service. And if you don't turn up you won't go to jail,so will presumably be sentenced to..er...community service.
Somebody's not thought this one through A fitting epitaph for the last 14 years. |

Whether there’s any merit in the idea or not,it’s amazing that a govt can be in place for so long then only come up with something innovative when an election is called.not that starmer will be any better.they’re all a bunch of over promoted crooks.
|

It does seem an odd decision. We have a growing number of people in this country who are hostile to our values so they would undermine any military group that they join. We have a shortage of people of working age to fill important jobs such as NHS, IT, construction, farming, teaching, medicine etc. Like Starmer who wants to create thousands of new jobs, Sunak seems to be under the illusion that there are thousands of young people out there looking for something to do.

To be fair, the senior military and other defence experts are adamant that the dangers of a world conflagration are the highest since 1939. More money for recruitment and training of skilled military makes a lot of sense but untrained conscripts are worse than none at all as Russia has found.

Certainly stop a lot of knife crime and thieving Ignorant comment - all the evidence shows that with the current set-up after leaving the army, there is a much higher chance of committing crime, homelessness, drug issues and prison. |
By:
Who is committing knife crime and fleecing the public in broad daylight of their mobile phones and watches ? Ex military,I don’t think so…..

Time the government looked after the military after service rather than treat them like fodder….

Time the government looked after the military after service rather than treat them like fodder…. It's hard to argue with that - but that's not the policy they announced. |
By:
Mind you the origin who are committing the slaughter on uk streets come from countries where they think it’s normal practice.

We are all fodder outside the big house on the Thames……
Becoming clod and sinister….check the history of the past ten years…..and it goes on and on almost daily.. |

Certainly not a fan of the late Thatcher but this wouldn’t get a mention as it would have been dealt with early doors.
Takes spine to run a country…. Criminals invading her shores without documentation lol ffs…..and costing her government 8 big ones every day….fkn laughable…. |

More evidence, following the soaking wet announcement of the election, that Sunak is maybe
cleverer than we think: He's steeling the thunder from The Monster Raving Looney Party! ![]() |

Going back to the managements point can well imagine the resentment of some leaving the forces & why they might go off the rails.my nephew left the army after 10 years sevicea at age 30,best job he could find was in a supermarket, forced to sign up again 18 months later.years ago the army experience & skill set virtually guaranteed a job in the police or emergency services, now due to the imposition of employment quotas for minority groups it comes down to luck of the draw & which part of the country you live in.

When I worked for Esso a good few of my colleagues were ex military…..they put it down to discipline and manners.

Check the bench…..and there is Can….he ain’t popular with the London crowd….
|

The country is becoming a cesspool and it ain’t ex military with problems….
|
By:
No it's Tory politicians and their cronies.
|
By:
It is all politicians who are terrified of the media so they go along with the latest woke agenda which certainly won't include proper punishment and detection of crime, an expanded role for the military, or much tougher criteria for access to further education.
|

Discipline and manners should be learned in the home.
..... this shenanigans reminds me of "It Aint Half Hot Mum"! |

I signed up and reported for duty on 10 September 1970 aged 15 years 2 months. De-mobbed, 11 September 1983. Lesson number ONE... don't volunteer for ANYTHING! |

what a clown idea by an out-of-touch PM.
The armed forces are a professional body that should not be burdened with society's problems If you want to bring back anything, go for apprenticeships and borstals for those requiring not to dump your problems on your solution makers. |

Sunak's missus must be a nightmare if he prefers six weeks of utter humiliation over spending her money, er, time with her.
|
By:
Short of resigning, he was facing every week of humiliation until he called an election so why not get on with it and enjoy the summer holiday?
|
By:
This is what they turn to because they don’t have a clue how to handle the fkn mess they have made….
Going by all this labour m@slim garbage it won’t be a surprise if the Tory got back in…. People will still vote Tory just to keep them out….. Palestinian flag waver doing national service lol ffs…..but will ram it down the throat telling everyone they are true brits…. |
By:
It’s a bit unrealistic to expect teenagers to do a year of national service when today Sunak couldn’t do a full day of it.
|
By:
I remember my uncle telling me that his National Service started with 3 months basic training in the Army at Catterick
The Officers discovered that one of the recruits batted for the other side... He was kicked straight out... They put him in the Navy instead... |
By:
Will it affect my Dole?

Wonder if all this talk of National Service is going to influence how people vote, but if you're undecided, I think Bob Moran can help you out here

The plutocrats are always in favour of the plebs doing something for nothing (volunteering, national service, caring).
