Ya, his name rings a bell. I must have backed a few of his winners but can remember none though or which stable he rode for mostly.
Who'll be the winning jockey for Epsom 2024? I do not think it will be Moore, unnamed as yet until thursday perhaps given the stable has two principal runners at the moment.

Taylor was the jockey I followed as a teenager, and later. He started off with Harvey (Jack) Leader. But at various times was retained by JF Watts,John Winter,? Nelson,Jack Jarvis,Ryan Price ( where his mate Lester jocked him off Price's best horse) and Jeremy Hindley. He made headlines when successfully objecting to The Queen's horse in a big race in France. Wasn't done in those days. Died in Hong Kong a few days after being thrown and kicked by a known rogue.

Sorry to correct you Dr Gordon, it was Imperial Prince ridden by Geoff Lewis for Noel Murless who came 2nd to Snow Knight in the Derby, Giacometti came 3rd ridden by Tony Murray for Ryan price with Bustino in 4th, piggott rode Arthurian for Henry Cecil unplaced. I think Nonoalco the 2000gs winner was fav under Yves St Martin.

If you look at the bit of slo-mo at the top of the hill, Taylor looks almost exactly like Piggott in the saddle.
(Snow Knight unseated Taylor beforehand, but he didn't get loose. His lad kept hold of him).

Brian also rode for Freddie Maxwell in the early 70's..
As to his nickname 'Ernie', he was originally nicknamed 'Haynie' by H. Leader. Brian's father was an ironmonger, who used the popular saying ''aynie old iron?''.. so Leader called Brian Haynie.. later becoming 'Ernie'..
This is from Gavin Pritchard-Gordon's latest book, who worked for Leader at the time.
Gavin describes Brian as a ''fun loving man''.. he was close friends with Joe Mercer and Jimmy Lindley.

I think he rode Cawston's Pride in all her 2yo races for Maxwell. I think they had a useful colt the same year - Indian something - may have run in the Guineas. I don't think either of them trained on though.

I agree with ged that Taylor had a very similar style to Piggott.Bruce Raymond wasn't unlike either. I don't remember him riding regularly for Maxwell, but it's all a long time ago.
